4 Tips For Getting Your Business Cards Into More People’s Hands

By: Colleen Davis

Your business cards won’t do you any good if they are sitting in a business card holder on your desk. If you can’t find enough opportunities to give out your business card, try one of the four ideas listed here. You’ll be ordering more business cards in no time!

1. Give your card multiple uses.
Instead of your card only being useful for getting in touch with you, why not include some kind of offer or coupon on the back? Double-sided business card printing isn’t much more expensive than one-sided printing and you’ll recoup the extra printing costs quickly.

Common uses for the backs of business cards are listing emergency phone numbers or listing some kind of helpful info that is connected to your industry. A chef’s business card might have common cooking equivalents, like 1 cup = 8 oz. You can also use the back of your card as a loyalty card – when people show your business card at your store, they get 10% off or a free item. This way they don’t have to give away your card when they use it, and they have a reason to keep it.

2. Give out your cards whenever you talk to someone for more than one minute.
Some people refer to this as the one-to-one ratio. The premise is that if you talk to someone for more than one minute, they should have one of your business cards in their hands. This means you have to somehow weave the conversation to include something about your business or product within the first minute of talking to someone so you can give them your business card when it makes sense to (right after you’ve mentioned your job or business).

3. Leave your cards in various places around your city.
I’ve been to Mexican restaurants where there have been non-restaurant business cards sitting on the counter by the cash register. Generally, smaller businesses or non-chain businesses will let you leave some business cards for their customers. Laundromats, dentists, beauty shops and other small businesses will be willing to set out your business cards, especially if you offer to reciprocate by taking a stack of their business cards to your store. You could also leave a stack of business cards in waiting rooms or public restrooms if you really want to hit every place imaginable!

4. Get people’s opinion on your business card design
This is an easy way to get your card into people’s hands. Ask someone behind you in the grocery store line or someone that is waiting with you at the license branch to take a look at your business card. Politely ask for their opinion of your card’s design. Whether they like it or not, they now have your card in their hands and when they start to hand it back to you, say “You can keep that one. I have hundreds more at the office.” Then thank them for their time and tell them to contact you for any needs you might be able to help them with.
