4 Tips for Avoiding Web Host Scams

By: J Charleston

Looking for a web host? You really need to be wary in order to avoid web hosting scams. Read our 4 tips to learn what you really need to look out for when searching for your next webhost. Here they are in no particular order:

Scarce Customer Service

Youll want to make sure your webhost provides excellent support. You can test this out by calling in and asking a few questions before you buy. You could also try asking them a question about their services via email. Hosting is a big business; there is no reason for a major webhosting company to miss your call.

Limitless Features

Although it may sound like a fantastic deal, limitless features are not a good sign. No host is going to offer you unlimited space or especially bandwidth for an ultra low price. It just isnt going to happen. There will likely be a catch.

Although it is possible for a webhost to run a special unlimited offer for a short period of time (to get you to sign up), you can be sure they will either increase your fees later on, or cut down on bandwidth and storage space. The last thing you want is to have your site shut down because you went over your bandwidth quota for the month. This will cost you in customers and frustration. So remember that there will be a finite cap on your space and thats a good thing (otherwise theyre not being honest with you).

Long-Term Contracts

Dont sign a contract for your hosting. At least not initially. If you sign a contract, your host will have no reason to offer you great service.

Of course many reputable hosts will offer a lower rate if you do pay for a year up front, but its best if you try them out for at least a month first. Reputable hosts often offer a discount for paying yearly, but why not try them out first?

Uptime Myths

Uptime is the amount of time a site can expect to be fully functional and online with any particular host. Webhosting companies generally express their uptime as a percent. You want a host that will make sure your site is online nearly all of the time.

A host that claims they have 100% uptime is probably not being truthful. Problems will arise, its the nature of the internet and servers. Never fall for it when a hosting company claims they can offer you 100% uptime. Respectable hosts will often say 99% uptime (sometimes it may be a little more, like 99.5% uptime).

Its best if the host is upfront about their uptime and displays it clearly on their site. Uptime is a crucial aspect of web hosting. Learn more about uptime and web hosting reviews at http://top-5-web-hosting-charts.com/
