A Look At Kefalonia, Greece

By: Lucy Evans

Kefalonia is located on the west side of the Greek mainland. There are so many different ways of spelling Kefalonia and some of these ways include Cephallonia, Kefallonia and Cephalonia. According to popular belief it is said to be named after Cephalus, who was a person from Greek Mythology whose name in English translates to ‘head’.

Kefalonia is physically a beautiful island with green grass, blue seas and sandy beaches. It is also steeped in history. The island went under many different rulings from Roman, Norman and English tenure and was only intergrated with Greece in 1864 along with the other Ionian Islands.

In 1953 the Island would change forever, in looks and in population when a sequence of catastrophic earthquakes hit the island, one of them hitting a massive 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake ruined a great number of structures and resulted in billions of drachmas in damages, and at least 80% of the 125,000 strong population decided to leave the island for a fresh start on other nearby islands. Kefalonia itself was raised 60cm above its original level and this can still be evidenced on the coastline where you can see water marks on the rocks around the island.
