About Bastrop Texas

By: Curtis Reddehase

A growing community located just 20 minutes from Bergstrom International Airport; Bastrop has become one of the fastest growing towns around the greater Austin area. Bastrop is located about 30 miles southeast of downtown Austin on highways 71, 21, 95 and the Colorado River. It is the county seat for Bastrop County and was originally founded by German settlers in the early 1800s. Bastrop County has taken great pride in it’s restoration of this historic town. The convenient location to Austin and the airport has increased growth along the highway 71 corridor and the new outer loop I 30. The main industry in the area is furniture manufacturing and oil well supply. The Bastrop Independent School District has strived to continue its exemplary education since it began in 1883. There are six elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, and an alternative high school. Bastrop State Park is surrounded by loblolly pines and hardwoods and has over 5900 acres of parkland. The park has a swimming pool and available campsites along with hike and bike trails, canoeing and wildlife viewing. There are three 18 hole golf courses in Bastrop, ColoVista, Lost Pines and Pine Forest. Bastrop hosts many events during the year including the Pine Street Market days which is held the second Saturday of the month from April through December. The event is held in the Historic Downtown area with vendors selling arts and crafts, homemade goodies, woodworking, jewelry and many handmade items. The Patriotic Festival is held on the Saturday after the 4th of July each year at Fisherman’s Park. Many events are held at McKinney Roughs Nature Park and Trails which is located just west of Bastrop, including Night Time Nature Walks, Walk on the Wild Side for kids and adults and many other events during the year. The Hyatt Regency opened The Lost Pines Resort which has an 18 hole championship golf course, world class spa, and a water park on its grounds. You can also schedule a rafting trip on the Colorado River, horseback riding, and a unique excursion through McKinney Roughs Nature Park. The resort also offers a 62,000 square feet state of the art meeting and events center. The Lost Pines Forest, which is a stand of eastern pines along with red clay soil, creates a beautiful backdrop for many of the neighborhoods including the Tahitian Village. This neighborhood has rolling hills, beautiful vistas and runs along the Colorado River with over 7000 lots and an 18 hole golf course. It is conveniently located just off of Hwy 71. ColoVista is another golf course community with beautiful home sites ranging from 1800 square feet to over 3000 square feet with some lots up to 1.1 acres. These homes can be built with the golf course at your back yard or views of the Colorado River. The Colony is located just west of Bastrop and has one to 3 acre home sites surrounded by beautiful trees and wonderful Texas wildflowers. It features a swim center, weight room with dry and wet sauna, fishing pond, tennis courts, basketball court, hike and bike trails, and soccer fields.
