Act Professionally To Deserve A Job Promotion

By: Jamie Hanson

Promotion is sometimes a matter of self-endorsement – you can't be noticed if you don’t tell people who you are. But then, it's also a matter of telling the right people. After all, what's the point of telling Stan from the IT department how you saved your company hundreds of thousands of dollars if you work in Logistics? Learn who to approach to get your promotion in gear. Here's how:

Your supervisor

Provided that the promotion you're aiming for isn't going to make your boss lose his job, you can approach them to ask about how to advance in your department. You can try to do it subtly, such as by asking for more responsibilities or volunteering for more tasks but you can also do so with the more direct approach.

Ask nicely but be businesslike. Don’t put your boss in an awkward position. Let him know you're only doing so because you want to learn more and be able to do more.

As to when to approach, that depends. If your employee evaluation is coming up, that would be a good time to ask or if you've been doing a good job for the past six months, you can also ask to schedule a short meeting with your boss.

However, just make sure that you have, indeed, performed excellently. It would be very embarrassing and injurious to your promotion if you asked to be evaluated and have nothing to show for it. But if your contribution is worth it and your boss is a good one, they will be more than glad to help you shine as the exemplary employee that you are.

Demanding a raise or a promotion may very well be the opposite way of requesting for a promotion modestly. By modest, it means that discretion must be observed and a little humility wouldn't hurt. Often, appearing to be modest or being sincerely modest when asking for a promotion is much harder than just being nonchalant about it.

After all, when you decide to ask for a promotion you are aware of your capabilities that make you deserving. So how exactly do you appear modest in requesting a promotion?

As ironic as it sounds, it is possible to modestly boast about your achievements in the company while you lead up the courage to ask for a promotion. The most important task at hand however, is being able to back up your claims with proof that you are actually worth the promotion.

Moreover, you must also be certain that you were capable of the said accomplishments without the promise of promotion. The last thing that you want to do is cause your boss to be turned off by your hunger for promotion and being too eager to brag may also spell disaster in your hopes of asking for a promotion modestly.

Confidently modest

Another thing to remember in summoning the courage to request for a promotion is to be confident about yourself and your capabilities. If you yourself are not convinced that you deserve the promotion that you are requesting for then there is no way that you can convince your boss to give you the said promotion.

Remember that this may very well be a one-shot deal and you have to be able to sell to your boss the idea of giving you a promotion. Again, think positive and you’ll soon be on your way to getting that promotion.

Managers and company executives are the ones to rely on when it comes to training and assessing their subordinates if they qualify for a specific position in the company. So be on the prowl for internal hiring openings that are a promotion to you of your existing job. Always be visible to let your superiors know that you are interested in any opportunities to rise up your career ladder in the organization.

In some cases, managers or supervisors may choose a few of their subordinates to undergo trainings and seminars. The selection process depends on the qualifications and experience of specific employees, thus, making sure that the selection process will yield a candidate well suited for the job. If you are one of the candidates for a
training that is only offered for senior or qualified employees, then you can be sure that a promotion may be near at hand.

Sometimes, a straight forward approach will do. Like in some companies where supervisors or managers can hand pick the person who fits the qualification even without undergoing training.

There is no specific timing for a promotion nowadays, so always be on the look-out. If you think you qualify for internal hiring, you should talk to your boss and let them know you are interested.
