Adult Learning Disabilities

By: Patrick Hartell

If you've been diagnosed with a learning disability as a child the disability most likely won't go away as you grow older. In fact, you'll find yourself having to deal with many other issues and tests as you become an adult. You'll have to learn new ways to cope with the day to day living challenges that being an adult presents to you.

Most children plan on marrying, having children, and being a productive member of their society. If you have a learning disability, you will have to incorporate it into your life-plan. You will need to learn ways of handling the milestones in your life and still deal with your disability. You can lead a successful life with a little by taking some small steps.

There are many different kinds of learning disabilities that can have an impact on the way that you think, speak, listen, read, and write. All of these disabilities will influence how you reason and are able to compute information, such as mathematical data. Since you need to use most of the above mentioned skills on a daily basis, when these skills are impaired you need to come up with ways to compensate and adjust.

Many times you'll find that people don't understand how to deal with a person that has a learning disability. They'll become angry and frustrated as they try to explain something to you that you're unable to compute without a little bit of extra time and attention. If you're in an educational environment you many find yourself not completing courses that you need to further your education and career because of this frustration.

It's important that you recognize the limitations of your learning disability but at the same time you don't allow it to change your goals in life or stop you from living your life to the fullest. You should be able to enjoy the same things in life that those people without a learning disability enjoy, such as a relationship and parenting.

Being a parent with learning disability can be tough and stressing. To reduce the stress of being a disability parent, you can do a number of things like take care of your time and manage it properly.

One of the many tricks that you can implement so that you don't forget important family information is to have a calendar prominently displayed in the kitchen or other room in your home. Keep track of dates and times when you and your children need to be somewhere. This way you have a constant visual reminder to refer to so that you don't miss appointments and pick up times.

Keep your home as organized as possible so that when you need to find something it will be in a permanent location inside your home. This ensures that you don't spend unnecessary time searching for something that you need since this can often lead to your frustration and anger.

Remember that it is very important to remain calm and patient even when things are not going the way you may want them to. Everyone, even those who don't have a learning disability will have moments that are frustrating and trying. Do not blame everything that goes wrong on your learning disability.
