Are You Missing Out On Classified Ads Traffic?

By: John Donaldson

If you've never tried advertising on a classified ads site then you are probably missing out on potential buyers.

You are not alone here. In fact, most businesses, large and small, never consider classified ads sites as part of their business marketing strategy. They certainly should. There are many reasons to do so.

The classified ads sector has spawned some huge online players, who generate, on a daily basis, a huge amount of traffic. They are not to be ignored.

An example of one of the giant players in the field is Gumtree, which started out as a small local classified ads and community site eight years ago in London. From small beginnings, the site has grown to the point where it attracts a million visitors monthly. So, would your business benefit from a little Gumtree traffic?

There's another player not to be ignored. Loot is different from many other online classified sites in that it combines both the print world and the Web, all under the umbrella of Associated Newspapers, owners of the Evening Standard, Metro, the Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday, amongst other titles.

Loot has been in the buying and selling business for over 20 years with a print and online reach of some 2 million every month. Around half a million people visit loot.com alone.

But it doesn't stop there. For there are other major online classified ads sites which you would be mad to ignore. For example, there's friday-ad.co.uk, classifiedads.com and vivastreet.co.uk, which alone displays around a half million ads at any one time. Incredible numbers and incredible traffic which anyone can make use of.

That's only a few of the top sites. There are many more. Equally, there are hundreds more lesser sites, residing lower down in the pecking order. They shouldn't be ignored either although traffic to these sites is much harder to gauge.

As with the major players, one of the many positives is the ad placing process is usually easy and free. So why not sign up with a few of the minor sites at a time. Shouldn't take you long to do and the combined traffic should be worth the effort. But nothing is guaranteed. Use the sites that return even a modest amount of traffic. Discard the rest.

And talking of "minor" players, why not try my own classified ads site - freebieads.co.uk? It's been up and running for about a year now. Hopefully, at some point in the future, it will be able to hold its own next to the big boys. Time alone will tell.

It attracts about 5,000 visitors monthly and has about 500 ads at any one time at the moment. Yes, not in the Gumtree, Loot or Vivastreet league. However, were not these major players minor players at one time?

A final thought or two, to lighten the mood. Classified ad sites reflect the world we live in - which at times borders on the weird, judging by some of the ads posted!

On Loot, for example, bizarre items sold have included a Mr Whippy ice cream van, Australian shark cartilage, manure, a pencil sharpener collection, an organic wormery and a life size dalek.

Even British royalty have been known to use their services. The Duchess of Kent, apparently, sold her second-hand fridge through Loot in 2004.

There you have it, the ultimate proof. If classified ads are good enough for the British aristocracy, then surely they are good enough for the likes of you and me, too? You bet they are. So what are you waiting for? Get posting those ads!
