Arthritis Treatment For Those Who Are Sick of Joint Pain

By: Colin Johnson

Okay, I admit it: I have spent a high percentage of my waking hours adorned in some sporting colours locked in fierce combat with an opposition team. At the time I loved it and my body seemed like a well oiled machine. As I grow older, though, I begin to feel the physical repercussions of my former life, and this I don't love so much! Can anything be done to help me and the millions of other joint pain sufferers out there? Thankfully the winning combination of glucosamine and chondroitin seem to be winning a lot of fans.

Any good mechanic will tell you that the key to a machine's output is best found in prevention rather than cures. Like machines, our bodies require care and maintenance to ensure we last as long as possible! I think it is a terrible thing to think that the ageing have to suffer joint pain and their only `crime' has been years of physical activity and keeping fit. Amazingly, it is often not our muscle or skeletal systems which give up the ghost, but actually that which hinges those things together, our joints.

It did occur to me thoughout my sporting years that one day I may pay the price with joint pain and arthritis. I was a constant trainer and serious competitor in my day. Then within months of each other, both my Dad and Dad-in-law (who were both elite sportsmen in their young years) started suffering from debilitating pain in their elbows, shoulders, knees and neck. I watched with interest! The medical advice they received seemed to present them with two main choices: the first was to have an invasive procedure such as joint replacements and the second was to include in their diets proven supplements for reduction of joint pain. Both decided to opt for the less invasive solution,- (wimps! but wise in light of recent research!) - at least as a first step. Well, they were amazed with the results. What were these supplements? Answer- glucosamine and chondroitin, highly researched and recommended dietary supplements taken in combination.

Those people who have suffered from joint degeneration or arthritis are all too aware of the debilitating effect of these conditions. Sufferers are often confused as to the cause of their pain. In layman's terms, often the combination of a diminishing level of fluids and a cartilage breakdown has a painful and corrosive effect. This in turn affects the easy sliding movement and without the necessary slipperiness, scraping and grating occurs. As pain increases, movement naturally becomes restricted.

It is not just the aged and elderly that suffer from pain due to arthritis, oesteoarthritis and other forms of joint disfunction. Observing a former elite sportsperson who has played sport at the highest level and represented his nation in Rugby League just a few short years ago, I was amazed at a recent sight. I watched him struggle to put his socks on, thanks to joint pain in his knees and back. Such a simple task for one still so fit but it was causing major discomfort. Yet, this discomfort can be radically lessened with the use of a supplement containing glucosamine and chondroitin. It would now place you in grave danger if you attempted to steal them from him! In many ways they are, and have been his saviour!

Recent studies have confirmed that glucosamine and chondroitin provide pain relief. According to the Council For Responsible Nurtrition, the clinical trial sponsored by the National Institute of Health in the USA concluded that the combined use of the two dietary supplements provides significant pain relief for arthritis sufferers. According to many, early intervention with these two supplements will significantly slow the onset of arthritis and joint pain. Maybe everyone involved with vigorous sporting activity should consider taking them early in their career.

Both glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally found in the body, the former plays a role in cartilage formation and repair and the latter is part of a large protein molecule which provides cartilage elasticity. But it is the combination of the two which seems to works wonders in sufferers. My Dad says it took him a couple of months of use until he fully felt the wonderful effect of it in his body.

I strongly advise sufferers to take a wholistic approach to dealing with this problem. Don't rely just on supplements, or just on exercise, or just on an operation. Commence a daily exercise program which involves stretching (slowly) and warming up as well as cooling down. Exercise will assist keeping your joints mobile. Many gentle physical activities will assist in increasing movement. Why not try combining your exercise with a daily glucosamine anad chondroitin supplement and give yourself every chance for glorious and liberating pain relief!

Before exercise you should warm up by stretching your muscles and joints, but ensuring that you do not overstretch. Certainly do not push yourself too early in your warm-up. Aim for long, fluid movements as opposed to vigorous sharp movements. Stretches should be held for around 15 seconds. A well balanced exercise session includes various movements (dependent usually on your age and mobility), isometrics and weight-bearing activities.

There are few things worse than constant, debilitating pain. The simplest of everyday activities like cleaning your teeth, lacing your shoes, lifting up your kids and grandkids and even turning on taps, become an ordeal. Arthritis and joint pain sufferers are finding hope in a combination of two health supplements called glucosamine and chondroitin. As a long time health educator and adviser it thrills me to receive emails from join pain sufferers who have found glorious relief in these simple supplements.
