Austin's Notorious Summers

By: Curtis Reddehase

With the weather approaching 100° in Central Texas, I always want to spend some time in the water to cool off. But, I never knew how much there is to do in Austin or the surrounding areas during the summer. We live in the perfect city for outdoors if you can stand the heat. One of my favorite spots in Austin, Zilker Metropolitan Park, located right in the middle of Austin. Zilker Park, as called by many Austenite, is located in Central Austin off Barton Springs Road. This 351 acre park is filled with many outdoor activities to enjoy at any age. A favorite among kids is the Zilker Zephyr a miniature train that takes you around the park. This light-rail miniature train takes you on a 25 minute scenic ride along Barton Creek and Lady Bird Lake. The train runs every hour on the hour during the week and every half hour on the weekends, weather permitting. Kids love the feeling that they are in a real train; it’s a ride you won’t want to miss. When you are through with the train ride, you can walk over to the canoe rentals and take a ride down Lady Bird Lake. Canoes are available by the hour or you can rent one all day. With hours extended during the summer months, you’ll have plenty of time to fit this into your day at the park. Before you go home, you have to take a dip in Barton Springs Pool. Barton Springs Pool is located in the park within walking distance to the train and the canoe rentals. Most of the swimming pools in Austin stay warm through out the summer with the temputures rising above 100°, this pool maintains an average temperature around 68° year round. Talk about cold water! Why would you not want to jump in on a day when you just can’t cool off? Three acres in size, this underground spring fed pool is the fourth largest in the state. Whether you’re taking your family or just a few friends you’ll always be surrounded by a diverse Austin crowd. Many of the pool’s regulars will swim all year long even when the tempeture hits freezing. It’s always open and with the beautiful spacious grassy lawn that surrounds the pool you won’t want to miss this spot during the sizzling summer days. It’s also very affordable, if your summer plans are on a budget. Daily rates start at one dollar up to three dollars and you can even get a family summer pass if you plan on spending a lot of time at the pool. With all the history and attractions it has become one of Austin’s jewels over the past decades. Whatever you decide to do this summer, put Zilker Park on you’re to do list. It’s a part of Austin you won’t want to miss. You will continue to enjoy it for many hot summers to come; it most likely will become one of your favorites as well.
