Broadband Phone Service - Benefits And Drawbacks

By: Robert Pierre

Many of the things we do today are technology oriented. In this era of high speed, quick and efficient services, everything around us seems to work at the touch of a finger. Broadband phone services could be talked about in this context, considering the stages of development it has gone through.

Broadband telephony allows telephone calls to be made while remaining connected to the internet. In this way you get the benefits of both internet and telephony technologies. All you need is an adapter to allow the transmission of voice data using a broadband telephone. The internet connections needs to be a DSL or cable connection for quality purposes and using a satellite wireless connection or the older dial-up system will result in poor quality calls.

So how does a broadband telephone service differ from a normal phone service:

1. Reliability - broadband telephony is becoming more dependable, however it is not as reliable as a normal land line service at this time. If you lose your internet connection for any reason, you will lose your ability to make and receive broadband telephone calls.

2. Number Mobility - also known as portability, this refers to the ability to retain the telephone number no matter how often you move and indeed no matter where you are located. Broadband telephony relies on an internet connection, so if you have access to one you can use the broadband telephony service unlike your home telephone.

3. Security - a lock-in is used by broadband telephone service providers to ensure that only designated users may use the account. You are likely to be hit with high fees and charges if you come to change the users or the broadband telephone account.

4. Call Quality - generally broadband telephone calls are not of the same voice quality as a normal telephone service. The quality is improving as voice data transmission protocols are improving and in some instances you will not readily notice any difference in call quality.

As you can see broadband phone services do suffer certain limitations. However, the price benefits, especially for making long distance calls, outweigh most of the downsides.

To ensure uninterrupted broadband phone service make sure you shop for an efficient plan. Keep in mind key factors like cost for the plan, reliability, ISP, and internet protocol that the broadband phone service uses. Technical advances might tempt you to go for the latest, but make sure you do your homework before you make a decision.
