Cards For Every Occasion

By: Fred Jones

I’m pretty sure people have received a card sometime during their lives. Now I’m not talking about the report cards that you used to dread showing your parents because you weren’t really the kind to pay much attention during class. Don’t worry; a lot of us are in the same boat as you are. I’m also not talking about the kind of cards you play with your friends on a Friday night while drinking and conversing about your week and how annoying it was. I’m not talking about the cards that you collect of sports Hall of Famers nor am I talking about the collectable trading card games such as Magic: The Gathering or the Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

The cards that I am referring to are the ones that people send to another during special occasions. Yes, the Christmas cards, birthday cards and other cards people send such as weddings and funerals.

It’s a holly jolly Christmas. Well, not really. Christmas is still a few months away but I guess that doesn’t mean people aren’t already thinking about it rather it’s completely far from it. You can see the evidence of this if you pay close attention. My parents tried to buy some wrapping paper at a department store last week and the only wrapping paper that was available were Christmas designs. Again my parents received a package of really nice and expensive looking Christmas cards. I seen them myself and they do look very good. I was also surprised at the price of the cards. Thirty dollars for an eight pack of cards. That is $3.75 for a single card and envelope. I thought that was expensive until I saw how much cards can sell for.

You know the ever so popular Hallmark cards? Yeah, the one with the commercials on television and that even have parts in movies and such. Yeah, those are the cards I’m talking about. Did you know that those cards sell for about five dollars per card? I’m not talking about the fancy ones where it has a pop up picture or the ones where when you open it a tune starts playing. I’m talking about the normal cards that just open up and have that witty message inside the card. Yeah, that card is about five dollars a pop. Incredible, isn’t it?

I mean, just think about it. Christmas, New Years, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, and whatever other holiday I might have missed. Think about the amount of cards people send throughout the year for holidays. Hundreds of thousands of cards are sent from one person to another throughout the holidays, but also for special occasions such as graduations, birthdays, weddings and other occasions where a card might seem appropriate.

So yeah, back to the main question. Imagine having to buy a card for every present you give away. I mean, myself personally, I give a lot of gifts for birthdays and Christmas gifts. But because of how annoying it is to write a personal message on a card I usually went AWOL with the cards. But think now, a card would have been nice, but I don’t think that spending another couple hundred dollars on cards is something that I am going to look forward to.
