Choosing an online broker?

By: Vijay kumar

Surf through the Internet and you will come across web sites of numerous online brokers, therefore finding the one that meets your requirements may seem like a daunting task. Usually people arrive at the right choice through the process of trial and error. Simply put, take time to do a trial trade test of the prospective brokers before narrowing down to the one that meets your needs and personality. Also keep the following tips in mind, which will hopefully help you find the right online broker.

The best place to start your search is on the Internet. Go through the web sites of these brokers and do a comparative study not only on the services they offer and but also the fees and commissions they charge. You can also find out if they offer value-added services such as providing regular newsletters, research tools, and in case they do so, are these services free or you will need to pay. For example, you can find out if the broker provides real time quotes and if yes, are they banked and credited every time you make a trade. You can also find reviews of the online brokers on various forums on the net.

Apart from the Internet, you can search for listings in magazines. Some of these magazines periodically review the performance of these brokerages and also carry reports on the fees and the commissions that the companies charge.

The fees and commissions should serve as an important deciding factor. Again, you should check for hidden costs also if they exist, they are likely to dent your profits. For example, you may come across brokerage firms charging as low as $8 for their commission. In such case, ensure if this commission is for a market order or a limit order for the latter costs considerably more. Again, find out if the commission is at a flat rate for a specific limit. There are some brokers who charge a minimum amount and then depending on the price of the shares, they add additional cents per share.

Ask your family, friends and acquaintances if they have ever hired the services of an online broker. The right referrals can help you narrow down your search. For example, if someone you know has had a bad experience with a particular broker, you may also experience the same by chances. You also must consider the type of activity you have in mind for trading. For example, if your acquaintance knows a broker who specializes in day trading and if that is not the type of service you are looking for, then even if the broker has good credentials, he may not meet your needs.

Another yardstick can be the type of online help they provide. You can check out their FAQ (frequently asked questions) section and see if you find answers to your queries. Apart from this, do they provide customer care service and, in case you have a query, how much time do they take to address your concerns.

You can also enquire if the online brokerage firm allows you to trade over the phone and if the company has automated phone services. This becomes really important in case the online trading site is down. Also telephone trading becomes relevant if you are away from home/office and do not have access to an Internet connection.

You can also enquire about the minimum amount of deposits required to open an account. There may be some trading companies that require their clients to have a minimum amount of trading experience or a specific level of income to trade on their sites. Also find out if you can do online banking and deposit money in your trading account. This is because in a volatile market, you may have to deposit or withdraw money form your brokerage account. Then again, will the broker wire the money to your account or you will receive it by check?

All said, choosing an online broker depends on the needs of the investors. It is also important to note that no single brokerage can meet all your needs. So make your choice based on your priorities.
