Considerations When Buying Hewlett Packard laptops

By: Sean R Clark

Laptop Features

The power of a laptop computer, like any other computer, depends upon its CPU, or "Central Processing Unit". The design of a laptop chassis means that it cannot incorporate the large fans and heat sinks that are to be found in desktop computers. Indeed, even if it could, in the case of fans, these would produce an inordinate drain on a laptop battery. The solution is to employ a processor that generates less heat, and this means a processor with a slower clock speed. However, even the slower laptop processors – at around the 1.5GHz mark – are more than adequate for most everyday tasks, and if you do need to perform processor intensive tasks on a regular basis, clock speeds up to 3.0GHz are available.

The other feature of a laptop that will affect its overall performance is the amount of physical memory, otherwise known as RAM ("Random Access Memory", which it contains. All operating systems and software applications have a recommended memory requirement, so it is straightforward to calculate roughly what your total memory requirement is. Many laptops are supplied with 512MB, or 1GB, of RAM, as standard, and some manufacturers offer memory upgrades at special, reduced prices for new laptops. As a rule of thumb, 1GB of RAM is recommended for all versions of Windows Vista. The HP 530 Notebook PC, for example, is supplied with 512MB of RAM, as standard, with upgrade options to 1GB or 2GB.

Laptops are usually equipped with one, or more, data input devices that replicate the function of a conventional computer mouse. One of these is a small joystick, which sits in the middle of the keyboard, itself, and allows you to control the pointer by pushing it around. Another is a rectangular touch pad that sits just below the keyboard. Running your finger over the touch pad moves the pointer, and tapping the pad, or buttons alongside it, replicates clicking and double-clicking.

About HP

HP, or Hewlett-Packard, to the give the company its full title, is one of the most recognised brands in the field of information technology. It is, indeed, one of the largest IT companies in the world, with total annual revenue in excess of $100 billion dollars, and over 1 billion customers, worldwide. HP Notebook PCs are the best selling brand in the world.

Conclusion

Remember that, unlike laptop memory, the central processing unit (CPU) of a laptop cannot be upgraded at a later date. You should really, therefore, be prepared to invest a little more in a latest, state-of-the-art processor, rather than be tempted by something cheaper, but essentially outdated. In addition, when assessing the weight of system that you are prepared to carry around, remember to add ¾lb for a mains power adaptor, and 2 or 3lbs for an optical drive expansion slice.
