Cult Marketing Tactics

By: Woody Maxim

You've heard of guerrilla marketing tactics, but have you heard about cult marketing tactics? If you don't think you've seen cult marketing tactics in action, you haven't been paying attention to companies like Apple Inc. They don't just market their product, they market their "leader" (Steve Jobs) and their "lifestyle" , their "language" (iSpeak) and their "attitude" (a projection of cool and hip). It's genius!

You should be marketing like a cult leader your self. If you don't understand what I mean using Apple Inc. as an example, think of the online dating industry. By creating an exclusive seeming yet universally understood language of acronyms, they have created a "cult" industry to market their products in. Think about it - by typing in dating language acronyms as key words, you can find their products online: SWF (single, white female), PUA (pick up artist), and more.

Imagine how your product or service would sell if you could create that mentality around it? If you could associate your products or services with a lifestyle, a language, a mindset or attitude and a leader, you will reap the benefits immediately. You already have the leader (you), you just need the rest. Start with creating a language. Generate buzzwods and acronyms of your own to use in reference to your product or service.

Let's use me as an example. It aggravates me when I see someone selling a service they blatantly ripped off from someone else. When you see it and you talk about it you could say "WWWD", or What Would Woody Do?. Putting that in the comments section of a blog selling a ripped off product would create a link or bond between you and other Woody readers. You would instantly know what each other meant, and the other people would not. This will trigger the innate need to be "in the know" that people have, and they will want to find out what you know that they don't. Congratulations, you've attracted your first cult marketing customers.

Language is important, but you also want to generate a feeling of exclusiveness. You are trying to make people want to be in your club. Create language, use it and get your customers to use it. Create a mentality of an inner circle. Talk about your products and services as if they were a lifestyle choice or an attitude. Be charismatic. Have an active blog where you talk to your readers daily, becoming the accessible leader-guru that any good "cult" needs.

The more you can make your products fit the cult marketing mold, the more people will come to join your club. They'll tell their friends and colleagues, wanting people hey know to be "in on it" too. Because no one wants to be left out of the "next big thing", mastering cult marketing tactics can put yu at the top of the heap and drive your income to new levels. so crate your language and capture the feeling - make yourself into the next Internet "guru" today!
