Depression Is not The End Of The World, But It Can Seem that Way

By: Steve Simpson

It is easy to dismiss depression as weak minded or something that just doesn't affect you, however if you or someone you care about has ever suffered from depression, you know that depression is very real and often not something that will just go away. Depression has been portrayed in movies, t.v. and books since they were introduced to the world and is often the butt of the joke, but what does it mean today when we refer to a depression or a depressive disorder?

It is unfortunate that alot of people do not realize that depression is actually a serious medical condition and as such it is treatable. Please don't believe that it is something that is just made up or in your head, because that is not the case. Most people that suffer don't seek treatment because they think that there is no help available, however even the more severe of cases can be improved. Naturally the serious cases can tear a family apart not to mention the life of the person that is suffering from it. The things to understand firstly are what is the cause, how does it affect you and of course just what is it. Depression is the second leading cause of days if work in the United States, only behind Heart Disease which is quite a statistic. So what is it then that affects all those people.

It was reported in a major medical study, that depression caused significant problems in the functioning of those affected more often than did arthritis, hypertension, chronic lung disease, and diabetes, and in two categories of problems, as often as coronary artery disease. Depression is not just "feeling blue" or "down in the dumps". It is a medical disorder as much as is diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. It is something that day after day affects your thoughts, feelings, physical health, and whether you know it or not, your behavior.

The symptoms of depression are not limited to negative moods or thoughts but also to changes in your body's functions which can include irregular sleeping and eating, decrease libido, and crying spells. If not treated it has been known to increase the risk of asthma, coronary heart disease and even HIV. Every single person is at risk, and if it's not treated it can have a major impact on your emotions and feelings.

According to many studies, depression is much more common in women than in men, but the reason for this, still remains unclear. Besides the fact that woman generally do suffer more often than men, women can tend to think they can work through the depression on their own. Sometimes this can work, but ultimately it comes down to the cause of the depression in the first place. Depression is an illness that can be successfully treated in more than eighty percent of the people who have it. It is unfortunate that most people with a depressive illness do not seek help, as sometimes even just talking about it can result in the symptoms reducing.

If you find that nothing is working for you, there is an herbal supplement called Thyromine, which is claimed to be able to reduce depression. Thyromine increases the production of thyroid hormones and stimulates the immune system so that you can get relief from depression.
