Don't Just 'Try' to Quit Smoking

By: Darren Warmuth

'Try' is a very weak word. Just ask any coach or personal trainer. They'll both tell you that you won't get very far by just trying. You have to commit. Without a totally committed level of thinking, it becomes very difficult to be successful. The same goes for quitting smoking.

Even though you are looking to convince yourself or someone else that you truly desire to quit, by saying 'try', you are conditioning your subconscious beliefs for potential failure.

Let me give you an example. My wife has a fear of roller coasters and fast rides. I know she doesn't haven't a fear or heights or a fear of going at the speeds the coasters go, but for some reason I have not yet been able to determine, she doesn't like roller coasters.

And during the rare times my son and I have been persuasive enough to get her into the line, it is always tempered with 'I'll try'. This gives her the opportunity to reneg on her offer without too much teasing. And she always does.

Her way out? She only said she would 'try'. And trying as we all know doesn't really commit you to much. The same is true of smoking. I realize that saying 'I'll try' is what everyone else says, so when you want to quit, you say the same thing. However as we know, this will only soften your efforts whether you realize it or not because you have now given yourself a way out.

Talk to any smoker who has gone through this process, some of them more than once, and you will find that when they set out to achieve their goal of quitting they said 'I'll try' and when they failed, they state 'Oh well, I tried.'

So what you need to do if you are to commit is remove the word 'try' completely. Use a statement like this. 'I am going to quit to better my health. For the betterment of my family. For the betterment of my finances. No exceptions.' Can you see the difference? You must state the exact reasons for why you want to quit. With no allowances for weakness or failure.

Put this commitment in writing. Carry it with you everywhere. Have a copy in your vehicle; distributed around the house. Anywhere you can see it to remind yourself of what your true desires are. It will make all the difference in becoming a non-smoker.
