Enjoy the Christmas Season! Cut Out the Stress

By: Delorus Quintal

Ironically, the Christmas season that is supposed to be a time of joy and celebration often turns into a real hassle. Most people end up spending the whole time harried and unhappy. However, if you take time out to relax and prioritize your activities, you can actually enjoy the Christmas season without stressing yourself unnecessarily.

One of the best things that can be done is to determine not to do too much. Think about whom you need to buy presents for, and seriously consider your Christmas card list. There is no reason to get all of your acquaintance gifts, and if your college buddy has not sent you a Christmas card in a couple of years, that is one less card you need to write this year. A few token gifts, like chocolates or nuts, are good to have on hand and wrapped in the even of an unexpected present.

It is always a good idea to make a priority list of things that need to be done. It helps to sort out the most important from the less important things. Take care of the things that are important and if you start feeling stressed, just ignore the less important things. Do not’ttry to get everything done.

Stress comes when you stand on formality. It is better to organize informal parties during the Christmas holiday season. You can still wear nice clothes and have fun playing games. Serve elegant finger foods. You may want to have a sandwich buffet where guests can build their own sandwiches, and have some nice snacks readily available.

One of the biggest stressors associated with Christmas, especially if you have children, can be traveling to see relatives on Christmas. You can significantly reduce your stress at this time of the year by deciding not to visit any relatives at Christmas, and instead having a small family event.

Rest assured your relatives will not complain provided you are consistent in not visiting anyone on Christmas. They will not accuse you of trying to avoid them or playing favorites. Moreover, you can plan to visit relatives a couple of days after Christmas and stay for the New Year holiday. You do not have to rush through Christmas on other people's’sschedule, if you have a plan of your own.

Cleaning up is one of the most stressful activities. Learn to handle it intelligently. Clean up a little at a time. Have a garbage bag handy when you open gifts. Put the paper and packaging directly into the bag. Also, throw things away as they are used, and have everyone load their dishes in the dishwasher right after dinner. Basically, take charge, and things will fall in place. These little things greatly reduce the mess that causes stress later on.

You cannot completely avoid Christmas stress. These little tricks if played well can however make your Christmas quite a stress free one.
