Farting the lighter side

By: Fartin Martin

The internet was designed for information exchange; no doubt the internet has helped people from around the world to communicate freely. But the point is that what was earlier considered taboo is now completely acceptable online. From sites that specialize in adult toys, to sites that openly oppose political regimes, there is no shortage of sites that allow people with similar thinking to come together. There has been a recent boom in niche sites on the internet; people all over the world have started looking for sites that let them interact with people that share the same pastimes.
And it does not stop there; everything that can make an interesting topic for discussion is available online. And not just discuss farting; people can actually listen to farting sounds. Now it might strike some people as just outright improper to have a website dedicated to farting, but the truth is that humour the world over is has farting as a component, and there is no shortage of fart jokes on the internet. In fact the site is already doing well and is expected to become even more popular with time.
Think about it for a moment, was there any way anyone could have spoken to people from all over the world and discussed farting? Not before the internet came along. In fact not just farting, niche sites that target specific topics or a group of people have become a reality because of the internet. The best part is that unlike printed media, people have a choice of visiting sites they want, before the internet there was no way any organization could achieve such market penetration.
Niche sites have made it possible for people with similar hobbies and likes to come together without having to worry about problems like privacy, social approval etc. Critics believe that websites too should be regulated, but the truth is that like the hippy movement of the 60’s the internet is perhaps the next big social revolution modern society has witnessed
Before the internet came along the most popular medium of mass communication was paper. Newspapers and magazines have their limitations, the first is that they are not free and the second a magazine only caters to popular topics. The problem was that there was no such thing as a niche magazine, the most ‘niche’ a magazine gets is being a business magazine or a porn magazine. Not to mention that there was no way for people to interact with each other using magazines.
This is where the internet wins hands down, only with the coming of the internet has the term ‘Niche’ truly come to life. No longer does the term niche mean scientific journals or business chronicles, the term niche today means a place where people that share the same hobbies and likes can meet and interact with each other.
