Helio Fin Overview

By: David Yuri

The Helio portfolio of innovative mobile devices got considerably thinner with the introduction of the Helio Fin, which is considered the thinnest folder available today in the U.S. The Helio Fin has an ultra thin blue-black magnesium body and offers Helio a full line-up of 3G content and services, such as MySpace on Helio, GPS-enabled Google Maps™ for mobile, YouTube™, Helio UP for instant upload of photos and video to YouTube™, Flickr and other destinations. Helio also has a messaging suite which combines Instant Messaging, text messages, picture messages, and E-mails in one ultimate inbox. This Helio cell phone also features Garmin Mobile™ for GPS-enabled voice-guided navigation and the addition of customizable RSS feeds to Helio On Top, giving members the possibility to sign up for updates on information they want to be delivered to their home screen.

The Helio Fin is the first Helio flip phone, and is based on Samsung’s Ultra series clamshell, like other phone devices, such as Sprint's M610 and AT&T's A717. However, the latest Helio cell phone is much thinner, measuring only 11.4 mm and has an upgraded 3 mega pixel camera. The Helio Fin is also designed with the rest of the Ultra features like stereo Bluetooth, a 4 gig microSD slot, large QVGA display, OLED caller ID display, and 100 MB of internal storage. The Helio Fin, as well as the Ocean, has new unified messaging applications. Two new services for both the Helio Fin and the Ocean have been launched, namely turn-by-turn GPS-enabled driving directions by Garmin, and an update to the Helio On Top home screen feature that can integrate any RSS feeds.

Calling – This Helio cell phone has several calling features. The speakerphone is quite loud for a thin phone; however, it's pretty average for normal standards. It has great alert options and unique rings including video rings.

Messaging – The Helio Fin has a flat keyboard and is not recommended for heavy e-mails or text sessions. The Helio Fin has a mailbox that populates quickly on the EV-DO network and users are even able to send photos in a jiffy from the camera through an E-mail account.

Camera – The 3 mega pixel camera takes stunning pictures; the color is accurate even under fluorescent conditions. It must be noted that you should not leave it in the night vision mode while taking pictures in the day or you will experience blurry pictures. The Helio Fin is able to incorporate all of the Helio photo editing options, the most notable of which being the ability to quickly upload to the Helio UP server.

Video – This Helio cell phone can play videos when uploaded to its microSD card. Helio also offers a generous selection of music videos for purchase.

Audio - The Helio Music Store offers one at a time over-the-air downloads. It should be mentioned that the Helio streaming capabilities are a little slow, as there is no obvious way to queue a track for download, and you have to wait for one to finish before starting a new one. The Helio Fin player is quite simple; however, the phone has some good EQ options, such as the 3-D surround settings, and manual EQ.

Web browsing, GPS, etc. – The Helio Fin browser is extremely fast, and is also filtered by Google in order to make pages easier to read on mobile screens. As far as the GPS is concerned, there is definitely no phone on the market to have as many options as the Helio Fin. The most popular feature is the Buddy Beacon that uses Mapquest maps in order to find friends on a buddy list. The Helio Fin is by far one of our top choices.

The Helio Fin is considered the ultimate thin phone on the market although some of its features still need to be worked on, which applies to any of the latest Helio Cell Phone.
