By: Noa R Flint

Cornwall’s Major Attractions

The majority of visitors to Cornwall are attracted to the sea, beaches and surfing. The beaches of Newquay and Polzeath are surfing hotspots. However, there is an abundance of other activities and sights.

Walking the 258 miles of the Cornish Coastal Path is a favourite pursuit amongst visitors. Along the way, they can enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife. Those interested in conservation, will also enjoy a visit to The Eden Project.

Visitors who are interested in history will have much to absorb -- Cornwall has many museums, ancient fishing ports and castles which tell of their maritime and Celtic past. Tintagel Castle is worth a visit to experience the legend of King Arthur.

Cornwall has a long relationship with artists who have made it their home. There is the excellent Tate Museum in St Ives plus many more independent art galleries throughout the county.

Cornwall is also becoming something of a food-lovers’ paradise. Well-known chefs have opened restaurants and pubs to showcase Cornwall’s fresh seafood and delicious local produce.

There is plenty to enjoy such as fishing, sailing, golf or just shopping in the boutiques and souvenir shops!

Choosing an Appropriate Cottage in Cornwall

Here are some helpful tips:

Which kind of location appeals - a rural farmhouse inland or a modern cottage near the sea?
Is it important to be near leisure activities and restaurants?
Is it necessary to have cooked meals or is self-catering sufficient?
Is it important to be walking distance to a beach or a golf course?
Is the cottage safe for children?
Does the cottage have all the essential facilities to suit everyone’s needs -- for example a dishwasher or DVD?

Amenities and Services

Most cottages come well-equipped with all the basic comforts of home such as televisions, microwaves and washing machines. Some will provide still greater luxury in the form of DVD and CD players, towels, hairdryer and even a food basket on arrival. If you are planning to do a lot of cooking, do check that the kitchen is well-equipped.

Some cottages are particularly suited to the needs of children. They will provide cots, highchairs, children’s cutlery, stair gates. They will even see that the little ones are entertained with games, toys, outdoor slides and swings.

Last but not least, check that the important systems work properly such as heating, ventilation and water.

Choosing a safe and reputable cottage

It is not worth ruining a well-deserved holiday by choosing a problematic cottage so always use a responsible travel company or a private owner who has been recommended. All reputable cottages should carry appropriate star-ratings and must be regularly inspected by recognised organisations such as the AA or the Tourist Board. Make sure there are relevant terms and conditions as well as contracts and rental agreements in place. Finally, avoid paying the full amount up front -- only pay the minimum deposit.

Conclusion

Most visitors to Cornwall return full of praise and go back time and again to enjoy its kind climate, amazing beaches and delicious food. As tourism is crucial to Cornwall’s economy, there continues to be a wide choice of good quality cottages to suit all budgets and tastes. Choose a cottage with the right amenities and in a location that will meet the needs of everyone in the holiday party, including children and older family members. Most importantly, book with a reputable travel agent or private owner to ensure a carefree holiday.
