Home Remedies for Kennel Cough

Kennel cough is an illness that infects mostly canines and sometimes cats also. The condition is very similar to that of the common cold in human beings and the best treatment for this condition is to let it run its course. The problem, however, is that the symptoms of kennel cough are extremely painful and can test the patience of many dog owners. The dry, honking cough can keep you and your dog awake through nights for more than 15 to 20 days at times.

Kennel cough can produce a number of symptoms including a dry, hacking cough, gagging responses, sneezing, and when the virus progresses can result in fever, nasal discharge and the coughing up of mucus. Without treatment, kennel cough can escalate into a very serious infection or even pneumonia.Effectively handling kennel cough is much easier when treatment is administered soon after the initial development of symptoms. There are several well-known and very efficient homeopathic treatments for the problem.

Kennel cough is a fairly common ailment in dogs. People tend to associate it with dogs who either are being or recently have been boarded (or "kenneled"). Though cough suppressants are not recommended, a mild pediatric cough medicine can be use if the cough gets too painful and violent for the dog. At all times keep your pet warm, comfortable and dry because this is critical in containing the problem.

Several homeopathic remedies have been known to minimize the symptoms of kennel cough. One of these homeopathic remedies is Drosera, which is effective in managing your dog’s dry cough. If your dog appears to have phlegm but can’t cough it out, Dulcamara may be a better choice. For cough that has associated phlegm, Coccus is quite helpful to your pet. Another homeopathic remedy is Bryonia. Bryonia, given 3 times a day, is also useful in managing the symptoms of kennel cough.
