How To Successfully Quit Smoking

By: Abbey Grace Yap

Cigarette and tobacco smoking are some of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States. But still, a good

25.9 million men and 20.7 million women in the United States smoke. Smoking takes roughly 438,000 American lives annually,

this figure includes non-smokers who inhale secondhand smoke from relatives, friends, and their workplaces. A recent study

done shows that 8.6 million Americans have at least one smoking-related disease.

But even with the knowledge that cigarettes contain more than 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which can be cancer-causing and toxic to the body, cigarette smokers can't seem to successfully quit the habit of lighting up. Cigarette smoking has been known to cause the following diseases:
Various cancers (mouth, uterus, liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, cervix, and blood)
Heart attackVascular diseases (stroke, high blood pressure)
Lung problems (bronchitis, emphysema)

It is important that smokers realize that they are not the only ones in jeopardy if they continue with their smoking habit.

The people around them are also at risk because of the environmental tobacco smoke that they inhale whenever they are around the smoker. Children may be born with low birth weight, die because of sudden infant death syndrome, or develop childhood asthma as they grow older. Non-smokers who get to inhale sidestream smoke from the burning end of a cigarette may also develop lung cancer, nasal sinus cavity cancer, cervical cancer, and bladder cancer.

So how does one quit smoking?A lot of people depend on stop smoking aids like Zyban and nicotine replacement therapy products like nicotine patches, gums, inhalers, and lozenges to get them through their nicotine cravings. Some people believe that nicotine-based stop smoking aids work to their advantage, being able to lessen the amount of cigarettes they smoke. But, the truth of the matter is, they're not ridding their body of nicotine because the products slowly release nicotine into the system.

Zyban, on the other hand, utilizes neurotransmitters to quit smoking. Although the exact mechanism cannot be explained yet.

This drug works by increasing the amount of noradrenaline and dopamine, brain chemicals responsible for moderating mood,

thereby reducing interest in smoking. It also helps diminish nicotine cravings. Zyban is best used with cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational support techniques in order to increase the odds of successfully getting the smoker to kick the habit.

One quick tip for smokers who want to completely get rid of cigarette smoking is to accept the fact that it won't happen in a day. The Empire State Building was not built in a day. Canning smoking will take work, patience, and the strongest of will power in order to succeed.

Surrounding yourself with supportive family and friends will help a lot. Tell them of your plans and ask for their

encouragement. Ask them to be firm for you when your resolve to quit smoking is starting to falter. With their involvement,

you feel doubly motivated in your quest to be smoke-free for the rest of your life.
