Ice cream-making used to be a real chore involving entire families. Fresh ingredients were placed into a metal container that was kept cool with ice and salt. Everyone in the family would take turns stirring the mixture with a wooden paddle, or turning a crank connected to paddles. It was a lot of work, but the results were so sweet.
