Many University Students Plans Are Ruined Because They Do Not Have Suitable Health Insurance

By: Donald Saunders

For a lot of college students the last thing they think about is health insurance and this is revealed by some recently released figures which show that about one-third of all college students do not have any form of health insurance coverage. Starting university is an expensive business and merely finding the money you need and getting your college loans is hard enough, but you ought to also think about including some form of health insurance along with everything else which you will need to have.

You should of course begin by investigating your parents' health plan if this applies as it is possible that it will include cover for you while you are at university. You do however need to read the small print carefully as some plans will cover you while you are attending university and others will not. Two items which you need to look for in particular are conditions concerning location and age.

Many health insurance plans will provide cover for children up to the age of either 18 or 21 while you are at home and some plans will extend this age limit as long as you stay in full-time education. However, many plans are limited to cover within a certain geographic area and so, although you may meet the age requirements of the plan, you might discover that you will not be covered if you are away from home.

When your parents' plan will not provide you with the cover you need then you will have to organize your own student health insurance and will need to look for appropriate providers. Luckily, this is not hard and there are many insurance companies which provide plans that are specially designed for students. So, where do you begin your search?

Initially you ought to look at your own university as colleges will often arrange for their own students to receive cover at preferential rates. This does not automatically mean that this is the best plan to meet your own circumstances and you will have to study the details of the plan to see it does indeed meets your needs. Nonetheless your own university is a very good place to begin your search and will usually give you the best deal. Another thing to think about when looking at your own university is exactly what medical facilities are provided on campus. A lot of the larger colleges will have first class medical facilities that are staffed day and night, while most of the smaller colleges will have much more limited facilities.

Away from the university itself you can look to the insurance companies as well as several publicly funded organizations for cover. In addition, do not overlook the fact that there are a variety of different forms of plan which are targeted at different groups of students. For instance, short-term health insurance cover may suit many graduate students and can normally be extended following graduation to cover you until you secure employment and are covered by an employer's plan. Also, there are supplemental plans that will provide cover for you for such things as pre-existing medical conditions that are usually excluded from standard student cover.

Nowadays health insurance is a complicated subject and you will need to shop around in order to to find a plan which meets your requirements and also fits your pocketbook. Nonetheless, this is something that you should not forget about because attending university is an expensive enough business in the first place and you do not want to risk your money or your future simply because you are not able to meet the cost of illness or injury.
