Maximising Your Skills Through Graduate Research Jobs

By: Scott Deane

Among the many skills that UK graduates learn in the halls of academia is the ability to research effectively. In most fields of study, the ability to research a variety of sources and to understand complex ideas is just as important as the ability to present materials in writing or in speeches. Research skills are heavily valued by companies throughout the UK, with think tanks, laboratories, and other firms recruiting researchers to help solve problems and develop new products. A graduate in any number of fields, ranging from political science to engineering, can use their researching skills to harness their professional position.

Social science and liberal arts graduates should consider working with a think tank or policy research organisation in order to maximise their skills. Think tanks are typically run by private organisations or universities in order to solve social problems and report findings to the public on a number of issues. Policy research organisations typically utilise graduates to look into one specific area of government policy, like health care, to determine the best path forward for the country. In both of these cases, a premium is placed on the graduate’s ability to think unconventionally and find solutions to long-standing problems. Strong research skills can help a graduate analyst move up in the ranks or move onto more lucrative positions in their career.

Laboratories need graduate researchers to deal with scientific or technical issues that the public has to deal with on a day-to-day basis. There are laboratories devoted to medical research, which requires a strong knowledge of anatomy and an ability to see problems from a number of different angles. Laboratories can also be devoted to developing consumer products that are safer for children under a certain age. Researchers need to not only understand the properties of the various parts of a child’s toy but solutions to problems of toxicity or unsafe operation.

There are plenty of other firms where a researcher can utilise their full range of skills. Automotive companies need researchers to look into auto safety, gas mileage issues, and aerodynamics. Aerospace firms need graduate researchers to look into technical and budgetary issues in order to find the right balance between the practical and the creative. Researchers can also work with law firms and government agencies to find the intricacies of legal proceedings and law enforcement issues. There is a place for any type of researcher in the UK job market as long as they are committed to a dynamic way of thinking.
