Rifle Scope Buying Guide

By: Niles Landreaux

This article provides an insight on the topic of rifle scopes characteristics and can also serve as a buying guide.

As defined in wikipedia.org, a rifle scope is a device used to give an accurate point of aim for weapons such as firearms, air-guns and crossbows. Coating is applied on the surface of the objective lens to achieve less light loss and glare. Three types of coating are available - fully, multi or fullymulti coated.

The main parameters of a rifle scope are the following - eye relief, field of view, length, weight, light transmission. Eye relief is vital in many shooting situations, because as per definition, eye relief is the distance that a scope can be held away from the eye and still give a full view. Field of view is the area which you cover while watching through the rifle scope. While the length and weight of a rifle scope are self explanatory, light transmission is more interesting as it determines what the quality of the image will be during the different hours around the clock.

Whether you succeed or fail, it all pretty much depends on the quality of your rifle scope, because it provides the image of the target. Having a top-notch rifle scope is very important, as it brings closer the distant targets and objects surrounding them. Some models also have night vision capabilities.

The buying decision must be influenced by your individual needs and requirements. Of course, knowledge can make a big difference here, therefore you must be aware of the different parameters given in the description of a rifle scope. The magnification power of a rifle scope is denoted by the number before 'x', for example - 4x, 6x, 4-16x, etc.

The power of magnification can be manually adjusted on some models, when denoted with 3-9x, for example. The diameter of the lens is given by the number after 'x' and is given in millimeters. The larger the lens, the brighter the image, because more light can enter the scope.

The downside of having a rifle scope with larger objective is that it becomes harder to carry around, so you must keep that in mind. It should also be pointed out that image brightness and resolution are in proportional dependence. Higher brightness means sharper resolution, resulting in a clearer image of your target.

Some of the leading producers of rifle scopes are Leupold, Redfield,Burris, Simmons, Tasco, Zeiss, Weaver. All those brands have line of models with different cost-quality ratio. Hence, to make the best buying choice, read as much info and reviews as possible and be aware of your specific needs.
