San Antonio Tourist Information

By: Gary Marshall

San Antonio (Sant Antoni) is situated on the west coast of Ibiza, about 10 miles (16km) northwest of the capital, Ibiza Town. Known to holidaymakers as 'San An', this is the island's liveliest resort with a host of popular nightclubs often featuring some of Europe's best DJ's. Just outside the town is the San Antonio Bay area. This is less built-up and generally more family-oriented than the main resort.

Many people start their night out on the 'Sunset Strip' to the west of the town centre. The most famous bar here is the Cafe del Mar, which helped to put Ibiza on the map as a major nightclubbing destination. Other well-known bars on the strip include Cafe Mambo, which has been used as a venue for Radio 1 parties, and the long-established Savannah. The biggest nightclub in town, Es Paradis, is located in the West End on calle Salvador Espiritu. Close by is another big-name club, Eden, which regularly attracts top DJ's such as Judge Jules. The West End is also home to many British bars, discos and kebab shops. A few miles east of the town are the two biggest nightclubs on the island, Privilege and Amnesia.

To the north of Sunset Strip is the small rocky cove of Calo D'es Moro, lined with several new bars and restaurants. Beyond this cove is the small, lovely beach of Cala Gracio boasting fine white sand. Next to Cala Gracio is the Aquarium Cap Blanc, home to a variety of Mediterranean sea creatures including octopuses, lobsters and eels. San Antonio's main beach is the 800-metre s'Arenal, which stretches south from the 'Egg' sculpture on the harbour front to the promontory of Punta des Moli. Alongside s'Arenal there are several good bars, most notably Bar M which has recently hosted concerts by the bands Kasabian and Babyshambles.

The best beaches are situated along San Antonio Bay a few miles west of the main resort. Cala Basa is a 250-metre stretch of fine sand, backed by pine trees and small cliffs, although it can get quite busy during the summer months. There are plenty of water sports available from this beach, including banana-boat rides and water-skiing. A little further along the coast is the Cala Conta, widely regarded as one of the top beaches on the island. The views from this remote spot overlooking the island of Isla des Bosc are superb.

Although most visitors to San Antonio do not come for the sightseeing, the Esglesias de Sant Antoni is worth a look. Dating from the late 17th century, this whitewashed church is notable for the defense tower built into its walls. Just south of the church is the harbour, from where there are boat trips to the beaches at Cala Conta and Cala Basa.

San Antonio's new bus station is situated just off the Avenida de Portmany on the eastern edge of the town. The number 3 bus service runs from here to Ibiza Town, while the L9 service links the town to the airport. San Antonio's tourist information office is on the harbour front.
