Sleeping Better The Natural Way

By: Abbey Grace Yap

Sleep is an important part of man's daily routine. As we go through our day, our

cells and tissues take a beating while we work. Sleep is the only time when the body

can start working its magic to repair itself from the damage it incurred from our

daily schedule. However, more and more people are developing problems getting sleep

or maintaining sleep long enough for cells to rejuvenate.

It is the increasing prevalence of sleeping disorders that lead to the increase in

demand for medications to help get a good night's sleep. Sleeping medications are

only meant for short term use because it can cause a lot of side effects if used for

an extended period of time. One of its most serious side effects is substance

dependency. Most sleeping aids are sedatives that are highly addictive when used for

a certain period of time and then abruptly stopped.

So how can insomniacs get a good night sleep without using potentially addictive

medications?

If you think about it, there are many ways for people who experience difficulty

sleeping to get around their problems and take the express route to dreamland. Here

are some helpful tips that insomniacs can use to sleep better the natural way.

1. Take only natural sleeping aids
Aside from the synthetic sleeping medicines, there are a lot of natural sleeping aids

available in the market. Melatonin, for one, is a naturally occurring hormone in the

human body that is responsible for regulating a person's sleep cycle.

2. Sleeping aids do not only come in the form of medications
Some helpful substances that can induce sleep come in the form of herbs. Valerian,

chamomile, lavender, hops, passion-flower, and occasionally cannabis.

3. Try cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
CBT works by working out any hidden issue insomnia sufferers may have about sleeping

as well as introducing healthy and stable sleeping habits back into the insomniac's

daily routine.

4. Consider aromatherapy
Although it is considered as an alternative treatment form, aromatherapy has been

proven moderately effective for people with mild insomnia. Using aromatic oils like

lavender, Mahabhringaraj, and other relaxing oils can help relax an insomniac to

sleep.

5. Set the mood
The surroundings will help set the mood for sleep. Try playing soft music that can

lull you to sleep. Use soft, warm light to produce a sense of calm environment.

Change your bed sheet into something soft and comfortable. Setting a sleep-inducing

environment can do the trick.

6. Go oriental
Try one of the most famous oriental alternative medicines in the United

States – acupuncture. This treatment includes sticking hair-thin needles to

certain strategic points in the body to release negative energy for a better,

more relaxed sleep.

7. Meditate
This method is a relaxation technique that helps reduces stress level and anxiety

which in turn calms the mind and relaxes the body for a good night's sleep.

Insomnia sufferers should bear in mind that the betterment of their disorder is not

tied on medications that could further damage their health. Know that there are

simpler, more natural ways to get yourself out of your sleeping disorder and well on

your way to a peaceful and restful night's rest.
