Texas In The Spring

By: Curtis Reddehase

In Texas, wildflowers are an obsession and the display is legendary. There are about 5,000 species of wildflowers in Texas. There are seasonal and year-round wildflowers. But for the really big display that you see in all the great Texas Wildflower photos, you will want to visit Central Texas in the Spring. This is when the highways and fields are full of beautiful and colorful wildflowers, dominated by the Texas bluebonnets.

Bluebonnets are the most popular Texas wildflowers in Central Texas. People come from hundreds of miles to view the Bluebonnets and take pictures with them. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures of people surrounded in Bluebonnets. During wildflower season it’s normal to see cars parked along Texas highways taking pictures with the Bluebonnets. The Bluebonnets start blooming in the middle of March and usually peaks about the second week of April. In the middle of April fields of the blooming flowers can be found around Lake Buchanan and Kingsland, Texas.

A field that was filled with Bluebonnets can completely change over a few weeks time to a field of red and then a field of yellow. All of the colors are spectacular to see. One of my favorite wildflowers, the Texas Paintbrush, starts blooming the same time as the Bluebonnets and bloom in the same areas as the Bluebonnets, side by side, from the middle of March through April. The Texas Paintbrush wildflowers are more predictable in where they will bloom. They usually bloom well where they bloomed the year before. Wildflowers start early in the year at the southern and lower elevations and then spread across the state, reaching their peak in April. Generally, the prime months are March, April, and May, with bluebonnets at their peak in April. Wildflowers continue blooming throughout the year, especially in the higher elevations. There may also be another spectacular display in the fall after late summer storms. Wildflower sightings are pretty common if you are lucky enough to live in and around the Austin area. Most roadsides around Austin are coved in wildflowers. Particularly good routes are along Route 290, Interstate 35, Loop 1 (MoPac) and Route 360 (Capital of Texas Highway). This vivid display of wildflowers in Texas is not totally accidental. We take our wildflowers very seriously in here in Texas and the Texas State Department of Highways uses wildflowers to landscape 800,000 acres under its control. The National Wildflower Research Center is located in Austin, Texas. The National Wildflower Research Center, located just south of Austin, has 42 acres seeded with a variety of wildflowers and is a good place to wander through acres of bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, pink evening primrose, and many others. There is also a butterfly garden and an observation tower. If you have a bicycle you can tour the Veloway right near the center. This three-mile bicycle trail has also been seeded with wildflowers. The Wildflower Center is 15 minutes south of downtown Austin at 4801 La Crosse Boulevard. Take Loop 1 (Mopac) south past Slaughter Lane, turn east a quarter mile on La Cross Boulevard.

This spring find time to enjoy the Texas Wildflowers!
