The Different Types Of Trout

By: Spence Talbots..

In the world of fishing, the trout is one of the common fish you will try to hit. Trout, however, is somewhat of a catch all term. It turns out there are a wide variety of them and we cover them here so you can speak about them like a pro.

Regardless of where you are in the world, it seems you can always find a fishing hole with trout present. There are so many varieties of trout that you might not recognize them, but just look for fins without spines and a small fin above the tail.

Trout are so commonly found that many people use the name to signify fish much the way people use the name coke to signify soda. They are found in lakes, rivers, streams as well as fresh and salt water the world over although they originated in Asia.

Everyone has their favorite trout, but the brown trout is probably one of the most common you will run across. It can be found in just about any type of water, and even has saltwater variations. In general, it is brown and prefers cooler water with cover.

If you love to use flies, the cutthroat is probably the trout at the top of your list. A variation of the salmon trout tree, it is found mostly in Canada and the northern US. The fish is so varied that it is difficult to describe it. Colors, size and characteristics vary.

A hugely common variation of the trout is the rainbow. It is from the salmon family of trout and is very hardy being found in different freshwater locations in forty plus countries. It is distinguished by a red or pink strip on its side.

When it comes to trout, the steelhead carries a special place in most peoples’ hearts. A good game fish, it is the saltwater version of the rainbow. It tends to be much bigger than its brother fish and is distinguished by its lack of a strip on its side.

Size matters when it comes to fish, so what is the biggest trout? The lake trout is the winner. Known better as the mackinaw, it is found primarily in large lakes such as the Great Lakes. The largest caught came in at a whopping sixty-five pounds.

Fishing is one of those sports you can enjoy day in and day out. As the old saying goes, a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. That being said, it is definitely better when the trout are biting and they often are.
