The Historical Sketch Of Hypnosis

By: Milos Pesic

The story of hypnosis is as timeworn as the human species. Even the most simple savages were aware of this startling psychological expression, and it was used in the sorcerous celebrations of their medicine men to produce fear and strengthen belief in the magic and the occult. With this extensive chronicle of magic and mysticism, it is not unforeseen that the conventional public view toward hypnosis has been and still is one of opposition, misunderstanding and fear.

The preliminary scientific presentations in the consideration of hypnosis began with Anton Mesmer in 1775, from whose name originates the idiom mesmerism which is still in modern use. Mesmer`s utilization of hypnosis began with his detection that distinctive categories of medical patients reacted to arm stroking and sleep suggestions. Mesmer connected these therapeutic results to the `quality` of `animal magnetism`, and he created a concept that animal magnetism was some inexplicable and peculiar cosmic fluid with healing properties.

Notwithstanding Mesmer`s tremendous insightful knowledge of clinical psychology, he had no bright perception of the psychological essence of his therapy. Yet, he cared for a large number of patients successfully on whom old-style medical procedures had failed. Unfortunately, his extreme temperament and mystical attributes of his therapy brought him inordinately to discredit despite the fact that various physicians often visited his clinic during the culmination of his accomplishment to absorb the important lessons in the unknown art of psychotherapy, specifically, the magnitude of clinical psychology.

Since Mesmer there has been a succession of outstanding men who became interested in hypnosis and utilized it effectively in therapeutic purposes, giving it an gradually more scientific groundwork and legality. Elliotson, the first man in England to make use of the stethoscope, got interested in hypnosis about 1817, used it intensely, and left superb transcripts of its sanative value in specific cases. Esdaille, motivated by Elliotson`s case reports, became an devoted advocate of mesmerism, as it was then called,
and actually succeeded in interesting the British government in modeling a hospital in
India, where he used it substantially on all types of medical patients, leaving numerous outstanding reports of major and minor surgery achieved under hypnotic anesthesia.

The debut of a psychological conception of the phenomenon began in 1841 with James Braid, initially an opponent and then later a most committed investigator and supporter. It was he who conceived the expression hypnosis, acknowledged the psychological attributes of hypnotic sleep, and addressed many of its manifestations, devising methods whereby to check their weight.
