The Importance of Physical Fitness Education

By: George Petrova

Physical fitness is a tremendously important topic for school aged children today. These classes stress the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle that has become crucial now more than ever. With kids living a sedentary lifestyle and eating unhealthy diets, physical fitness should be a top priority in schools across this country. Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, many school districts are forced to drastically cut or completely eliminate this part of education.

It's best to teach them young. If children learn proper physical fitness education they will build healthy habits for the rest of their lives. These physical education classes provide basic fitness knowledge and information about sports and athletic events and also impart health instruction in many school districts.

Fitness classes serve as a guide for children informing them about the anatomy of the body, its basic development, first aid information and sexual education. We certainly don't want our kids to be learning all this at wrong places, so these sessions are the best place to inform them about it. The scope of physical fitness isn't limited to playing sports but it's about the quality of life.

One of the classic aspects of any physical education class is the President’s Physical Fitness program. Children attempt to complete a series of tasks set by a Presidential panel in order to receive a certificate of achievement. For many children, this certificate is a source of great pride and shows kids of al ages and skill levels they can accomplish a goal.

Physical fitness education usually serves as the only means of exercise for a great many children in this country. In previous generations, children walked or rode their bicycles to and from school and engaged in physical activities outside of the classroom. These days, children are driven to school by a parent, car pool, or bus. After a day of sitting in a classroom, today’s kids sit in their room and play video games, surf the internet, or watch television. Physical education classes offer their only chance for movement, often during the entire week!

If your ward's school chooses to ignore fitness sessions by either reducing or eliminating the fitness program then make your voice heard. Suggest them new alternatives, and encourage them to keep this effort as an ongoing one. Bring your concern to the notice at the Parent and Teacher meeting or school board meeting.

Many parents believe Physical Fitness Education is unnecessary and takes away from other “more important” subjects. Truthfully, this subject is far more important than previously thought, since it provides a base of knowledge for children beginning their healthy lives.

It is always good to motivate your child for taking part in various extra curricular activities. Set a fitness schedule for your child and make him head towards healthy living. Never forget that a child learns from adults, so you have to serve as a role model for him. Show him to live life the healthy way, by doing so yourself.
