The Ingrown Toenail And The Raging Pain It Brings

By: Jeff Foster

An ingrown toenail is a condition that if you have ever had one, you will never forget it!

It really doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl, a man or a woman, we all are susceptible to an ingrown toenail. One of the biggest challenges is that the aching pain and throbbing of that toe can nearly drive you to your knees at times.

Here's the good and bad news. An ingrown toenail is a rather common foot condition. It happens when the pointed edge of the nail digs its way into the soft fleshy part of the skin of the toe. Man, that just sounds painful reading those words!

An ingrown toenail happens because as the sharp corner of the toenail begins to grow it begins to dig into the skin at the corner of or at the side off the toe. Redness, pain, and inflammation at the very spot where the nail curls into the skin, is the very first symptom of an ingrown toenail that you will see.

An ingrown toenail occurs most commonly to the great big toe and if it is bad enough, the ingrown toenail can even lead to an infection of the nail. This of course will require even more extensive treatment in order to battle back the toe infection.

If you leave an ingrown toenail untreated, it can progress to a horrific infection or even an abscess that requires surgical intervention. Quite often you can take care of your ingrown toenails all by yourself.

If the pain and agony of the feet continue and your ingrown toenail isn't getting any better, then you should make a call to your health care provider and make an appointment for some help.

There are some times that you should seek medical treatment first and not try to treat your ingrown nail by yourself. One of those times is if you are diabetic and another is if it is clearly evident that an infection is present. If either of these are an issue, then make the call first before going after the ingrown nail yourself.

An ingrown toenail is an inconvenience and irritation that must be dealt with. Whether you address the issue on your own or you get the assistance of your health care provider, it really doesn't matter.

Ingrown toenail treatment is a must. Think about it...dealing with the ingrown nail will help you to relieve the pain and hopefully avoid any infection from the wayward nail.
