The Low Down On Lasik. Laser Eye Vision Correction Is A Permanent Fix?

By: Dr. Kim Robbins

LASIK, aka in-Situ Keratomileusis, has benefits over traditional eye surgery. The LASIK procedure goes under a protective layer of corneal tissue.

As a result, there is less surface area to heal, less risk of scarring, less risk of corneal haze, less postoperative need for medications, and vision returns more rapidly, often within a day or so. LASIK can also treat a higher range of vision errors.

Although postoperative results vary, most patients are able to pass a drivers' license test without their glasses or contact lenses.

IS LASIK RIGHT FOR ME?

If you have had fairly stable vision for the past year, LASIK may be right for you. It is recommended to not have a large change in vision over the past 12 months. Consult your physician if you have any doubts.

LASIK corrects the vision of people who are near-sighted, far-sighted, and have astigmatism. Patients must also meet basic medical and visual health criteria. Age should not be factor when considering LASIK. LASIK has been successfully performed LASIK on people between the ages of nineteen and sixty-eight!

LASIK is right for you if you are motivated to make a change in your life, and you have realistic expectations of and understand what LASIK can do for you.

Laser eye surgery, or LASIK, is not recommended while taking some medications. Consult your physician or surgeon. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing.

Robbins Eye Center will set up a consultation where the Doctor will personally go over your prognosis with you. You and the Doctor can decide when, and if, LASIK is right for you. More often than not, candidates qualify for this procedure and you can make the decision to see again.

BENEFITS OF LASIK

The LASIK benefit is permanent visual correction and a life without the hassle of glasses or contact lenses.

The LASIK procedure is virtually painless. LASIK is convenient because both eyes can be corrected at the same time and you are at the Laser Center for less than 2 hours! Most patients return to work the following day. If you wear contact lenses, imagine not having to put them in every morning or clean them every night! You will save money with LASIK when you consider how much you currently spend on glasses, contact lenses and solutions. This procedure can relieve chronic allergies or irritation from contact lenses.

Generally patients return to driving and work the very next day. Your vision will improve gradually over the first 24 hours till the full effect of the surgery is realized.

ABOUT THE LASER EYE SURGERY PROCEDURE

Your eyes will be numbed using anesthesia contained in eye drops. Your eye will be held open with a small holder in order to prevent you from blinking and creating a problem during the procedure.

Your surgeon will use something called a microkeratome to make a little "flap" in the cornea. You will look directly into a light and the procedure will be performed to reshape your cornea. This is generally accomplished in less than a minute! You may feel some pressure on the eye but no pain or discomfort. The protective flap will be folded back where it bonds with your eye with any stitches or other means of securing it. Your eye heals itself!
