The Art Of Perfection

By: brain strom

Diamond cutting is a science that changes a diamond into a precious gem from a rough stone. Cutting a diamond requires a lot of specialized knowledge, equipments and techniques because of the extreme hardness of the diamond. Diamond cutting has two different meanings in relation to the shape, specific quality of the cut within the shape, and the quality and price that varies greatly based on the cut quality.

As we know that diamonds are very hard to cut, so special diamond bladed edges are used to cut them. The first major development in diamond cutting came with the point cut which follows the natural shape of an octahedron shaped raw diamond, eliminating waste in the cutting process. The process includes various steps like planning, cleaving, bruting, polishing and final inspection. A manufacturer would first analyse a diamond from an economic perspective keeping in mind about how a faceted diamond would be cut. The main objective here is that of maximum return on investment for a piece of diamond. The next objective is that how quickly a diamond can be sold. Using scanning devices to get a 3-D computer model of the rough stone, inclusions are photographed and placed on the 3-D model which is further used to find an optimal way to cut the stone.

The choice of cut may be influenced by many factors like weight retention, popularity of shapes, also physical factors which include the original shape of the rough stone, and location of the inclusions and flaws that are to be eliminated. Weight retention analysis studies the diamond rough to find the best combination of finished stones relating to per carat value. The round brilliant cuts and the square brilliant cuts are preferred when the crystal is an octahedron as two stones may be cut from such a crystal. Certain crystals like macles are more likely to be cut in a fancy cut.

Cutting and polishing of a diamond results in a dramatic loss of the weight. In colored diamonds, cutting influences the color grade of the diamond, thereby raising its value as certain cut shapes would intensify the color of the diamond. The other consideration of a diamond planning is to how quickly a diamond can be sold. Certain cutting plan may yield a better value, a different plan may yield diamonds that will sell sooner. The final stage involves cleaning the diamond with acids and then examining the diamond to see if it meets the quality standards of the manufacturer.
