Things To Consider In Choosing A GPS System

By: Noa R Flint

Satellite navigation systems do more than simply pinpoint a specific location on earth. These Global Positing Systems (GPS) can take that data and use it to generate more information, such as direction you need to travel, terrain, roads, weather and other important details.

GPS uses satellite navigation by receiving signals from at least three orbiting satellites and then using that information via mathematical triangulation to determine your position on the planet.

Many modern vehicles are being made with built-in GPS devices. GPS is also useful for hikers and campers, sea-going vessels and aircraft. There are different types of GPS hardware for practical use and these can be categorised into hand-held GPS, marine GPS, vehicle GPS and GPS for PDAs.

Hand-held

These are suitable GPS devices for hikers and those who love the outdoors. The units are lightweight and have easy to use interfaces that allow you to retrieve information with less fuss.

There are significant differences in hand-held devices, with some being waterproof while others offer colour screens, which make it easier to view. If you require vast mapping information, you are better off buying a unit with a memory expansion slot in order to help you download voluminous mapping data. The Garmin eTrex Summit GPS is designed for hikers, being waterproof and having an in-built compass.

Though hand-held devices are mostly associated with individual outdoor activities, they can also be used on boats.

Marine

Marine GPS units can either be mounted on to a fixed place on a vessel or come in the form of a hand-held device. For sailors who spend a lot of time at sea, GPS units should come with vast mapping information and expandable memory in order to download nautical charts. Digital charts can be quite costly but save paper and can provide equivalent or superior detail.

Vehicle

Vehicle GPS is among the most popular forms of modern commercially marketed satellite navigation systems. These devices are normally larger and heavier than hand-held devices because of the need to store greater volumes of mapping data.

Car units are usually mounted on the dashboard or just above the drivers head and receive satellite signals through the windscreen. Some units have antennas to strengthen their reception.

If you want to install GPS in your car, opt for colour screens, which are easier to read and offer more detail. Also choose units with larger screens because you need to be able to digest navigational information within a split second so that you can continue focusing on the road ahead.

Even better are those with voice instructions, which means you can hear where you are. Voice systems can be expanded with text-to-speech software that turns written street names into audible sound. Asn an example, the MIO C510 MioMap device has software maps for 24 countries, touch screen operation and a built-in speaker.

PDAs

Although they can be described as hand-held systems, PDA with GPS technology provide navigational as well as normal PDA functions. Look for PDA-compatible GPS systems, which allow you to attach a small GPS antenna to your machine and turn it into an effective navigation tool. Though compact, they are not as reliable for hiking as purpose-built hand-held GPS devices, which are better equipped to survive bad weather conditions.

Conclusion

GPS technology can be of great benefit if you are on the move. You can take advantage of a range of practical features that help you find your way no matter what form of transport you are using. Be sure that features are necessary as everything comes at a cost, not only financial terms but in size and weight which is particularly important when considering a hand-held device.
