Thoughts On Buying A Yamada Dvd Player

By: Noa R Flint

DVD players, delivering picture and sound quality above and beyond the capabilities of analogue, VHS tape, are now replacing – or, indeed, have replaced – the older technology, at the heart of many home entertainment systems. Most DVD players will play disks in a variety of formats, including DVD+/-RW, CD, MP3 and JPEG, and some also include an expansion card slot, compatible with popular memory expansion cards (SD, CF, MMC, etc) from digital cameras and camcorders. DVD media has high storage capacity – roughly seven times that of a CD – yet is compact, durable and easy to navigate.

DVD Player Features & Benefits

DVD technology is capable of producing pictures with roughly 500 horizontal "scan lines" – as opposed to 240 for VHS, or 250 for its now defunct competitor, Betamax – so it is easy to see why DVD pictures are clearer, sharper and richer in deep, natural looking colour. Some more sophisticated DVD players also support "progressive" scan, which generates scan lines sequentially, and refreshes the entire picture 60 times a second. This feature, while a little more expensive than conventional, "interlaced" scanning techniques, does produce a smoother image. The Yamada DVD-2700X model, for example, supports progressive scan.

As far as audio playback is concerned, "Dolby Digital" is the industry standard for commercial DVD recordings. Dolby Digital is what is known as "5.1 channel" format, allowing five main sound channels (the "5") and an additional sub-channel (the ".1"), for low frequency bass effects, to be recorded onto a DVD soundtrack. To experience true digital surround sound, therefore, you will require a total of six loudspeakers – five main speakers, and a "subwoofer" – located around the listening space. Some DVD players are capable of decoding Dolby Digital themselves, whilst others may require separate decoding and amplification equipment. The Yamada DVD-Mi220X DVD player, for example, supports 5.1 channel digital surround sound, HDMI ("High Definition Multimedia Interface") and coaxial and optical digital audio.

About Umax

The Umax Group supports a network of over 40 subsidiaries and distributors in Europe, including in the UK, Germany, France, and eastern Europe. Its main focus is on consumer electronic products, including home entertainment components, such as DVD players, DVD recorders and surround sound speaker systems, which are marketed under the Yamada, Kazuki and Vaova brand names.

Conclusion

Remember that a DVD player is just one component of your home entertainment system, and that the types of connections available for other components can make all the difference to the performance of the system, as a whole. The output connections from your DVD player should obviously match the inputs on your television, stereo HiFi, or surround sound system, but, more than that, you should use the best available connections, in terms of quality. If you have the latest equipment, which supports HDMI ("High Definition Multimedia Interface"), then you need look no further for uncompressed, all digital video, and audio, in a single cable. Otherwise, as a general rule, component video is better than SCART, is better than S-video, is better than analogue RCA, for video connections, and optical digital is better than coaxial digital, for audio connections.
