Tips In Preventing Link Hijacking

By: Morten Olander

Have you wondered why you are not getting any commissions from your affiliates but it seems as if your website has a lot of traffic? It is possible that your affiliate links have been hijacked and someone else is reaping your commissions.

Link hijacking is a serious problem today on the Internet and it is very hard to manage or control. It occurs when someone joins an affiliate program and agrees to put a link on their website. Every time a viewer comes to the website and clicks on the link and makes a purchase, you will get a percentage of all purchases. What happens is that the URL you are given for the link from the affiliate has an ID at the end of the string that identifies who you are. This is how they tell who to cut the check to when purchases are made. When link hijacking occurs, the ID number at the end of the URL is changed to reflect another persons ID so they get the benefit of your commission.

One way to confuse link hijackers is to use a JavaScript redirect page. Using this method redirects people to your affiliate link while you are hiding your link in the page at the same time. It is very beneficial because your affiliate link is not exposed in email messages and in articles that are posted online. Only after a person is redirected then someone might be able to see your affiliate ID in the address bar. If you are interested in using redirect scripts there are many places that you can find them all over the internet. All you have to do is search for free JavaScripts.

Another way to hide affiliate links and protect your earnings is by using a zero-frame or an invisible frame that has the capability of masking the affiliate link and making it appear that you are sending people to another page on your website. In reality, you will be sending them to your affiliate link. This method is considered a better way to safeguard your affiliate links than by giving JavaScript. This is because when an affiliate link is clicked on and the different script pulls up in the address bar, then it is evident that it is an affiliate link.

When you are concerned about protecting your affiliate links from being hijacked and someone taking all of your commissions, you also can use URL encryption. You should also keep in mind that if you plan on selling through other people’s affiliate links, that you shouldn’t give them naked links. You should be sure to mask the links or use JavaScript because they are sure to be hijacked and you will lose the commission.

The last thing that you want to happen when you build your website and become a member of several affiliate programs is to have someone steal your commissions. This is something that is happening all of the time and only you can protect your website. Masking and using scripts are the best methods to hide your affiliate links.
