Traditional Native Healing Systems

By: Rick Martin

Although different cultures historically have developed differently, many civilizations formed ways of healing the human body that were remarkably similar. A study of such methods and cross fertilization has further enriched the information that has come down through the ages regarding ways to heal the body and enrich the mind. Traditional native healing systems have been around for thousands of years. In this particular case "traditional" doesn't mean that it is a formal and/or a widely accepted practice, in the modern world. It means that it follows the traditions of a people. A prime example is the belief that each of the body systems can be affected by the health of each of the other systems. Pressure points manipulation, sweat lodges, massage therapy and nutrition therapy are just a few of the types of practices used to heal the body and spirit of individuals in nearly early ancient civilization.

Natives, from every country around the world, have a different type of healing system than does modern medicine. Although modern medicine is becoming more accepting of the native healing systems due to the fact that they have been around for so long and the fact that one doctor after another has seen a patient that has been healed when they thought that there was little to no hope. Another reason that these holistic health practices have become more widely accepted is because science and research have shown that it is better to treat the whole body than just one disease or symptom.

Holistic health and healing practices are the way that many cultures have treated their sick and wounded for millennia because they found in the far distant past, that it is most often not enough to treat just one condition or symptom. Holistic means that the whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts. Therefore holistic health means that treating the whole person is better than treating just one symptom. The holistic health viewpoint of most natives is that to heal any part of someone who is sick, they must receive mental, emotional and physical healing.

Over the last 20 to 30 years it has become more and more evident, that a person's mental state, as well as their emotional state, plays a large part in their physical state. It has also been proven that someone who works on their physical state and their mental state greatly increases their emotional healing. The same goes for a person’s mental state. This once again goes to prove the theme of holistic health and healing as well as a statement that, although it has been said many different way's and in many different languages, has been around since before written record.

Benjamin Franklin said it, Einstein said it, Da Vinci said it, Socrates said it, "The sum is greater than the individual”. If these great minds proclaim it and many other great minds that go as far back as written and oral history have proclaimed it, then there must be, at the very least, some truth to it.
