Understanding Business Process Improvement

By: Robert Pierre

What is important to business owners is the bottom line - profitability. They make sure that they obtain this by concentrating on satisfying their customers and by achieving end business objectives.

Processes are tools which enable the businesses to achieve these objectives on a seamless manner. More often than not, a business that has good and effective processes will achieve results continually thus ensuring that the organization is on top form in terms of productivity and quality. That said, with the constantly changing dynamics of any industry it is extremely important for businesses to adapt themselves to changes. This can be achieved by good business improvement strategies.

Is Business Process Improvement for existing processes only?

To successfully implement improvements in business processes, there should be a way to measure data, especially the difference between results from an old business process versus a revised one. This is only possible for existing processes. A business process improvement activity invariably begins with process mapping where one studies the different aspects of the business process to see where improvement measures can be put into action.

What does Business Process Improvement achieve?

To understand this, let us take an example. Company A is a manufacturing company which produces consumer goods for use by its customers. It produces 1000 units of a particular product on a daily basis whereas the demand has continually been 2000 units a day. The effective method that the company should employ is to reengineer their processes by business process improvement techniques to ensure that the demand of 2000 units a day is met.

Is a Business Process Improvement easy to implement?

A Business Process Improvement is fairly easy to implement, especially for someone who understands the businesses processes. However, it should be noted that those involved with the business process improvement should have an attitude that is open to change. For some employees, the prospect of having to change from something they are used to doing to something they have to learn is difficult to accept. That is why it is important to take the employees directly involved into confidence before such improvement measures are put into work.

There are plenty of methods available for professionals involved in a Business Process Improvement to help them optimize business processes. These include Total Quality Management, Kaizen and Six Sigma.

What is important in a Business Process Improvement activity is to ensure that there is teamwork. The success of the improvement measures rests on this vital element.
