Understanding Smoking Bans

By: Abbey Grace Yap

In 2005, A satirical movie titled Thank You For Smoking was aired. Its plot was about the

conflict between the smoking companies, the groups that are supposed to study the different

effects of tobacco and smoking, and the organizations that are pushing for a smoke-free America.

Although the movie is fictional, it's not that far from what happens when lawmen try to pass

smoking bans for their states.

Smoking bans are public laws that prohibit the smoking of tobacco products in work places and in

public areas. These laws were created mainly in consideration for other people inside the work

place and in public areas who do not smoke. Studies have proven how much secondhand smoke can

affect a person who inhales it compared to how much it affects the smoker. There are three

parties affected in smoking bans – the tobacco companies, the smokers, and the non-smokers.

Tobacco companies, as you would expect, have been adamant in having the smoking bans passed. Why

wouldn't they? Banning smoking in public areas would mean lesser sales and lesser income. And

lesser income never did bear good news for any kind of business.

Smokers are affected in a sense that they can no longer smoke cigarettes wherever they please.

Now that smoking bans have designated smoke-free areas, cigarette smokers now have to be careful

about where to light up. Because if they do it in a no-smoking area, they can and will be

punished by the law.

The non-smokers are the ones at the winning end of this bargain. First, they no longer need to

worry about developing medical complications such as lung diseases from unwillingly inhaling

secondhand smoke.

It is important for smokers and tobacco companies to understand the full extent of inhaling

secondhand smoke in order for them to understand the need for a smoking ban in certain places.

Continuously being exposed to environmental tobacco smoke increases a person's risk of

developing not only lung disease, but also cardiovascular complications and various kinds of

cancer.

Smokers should look at smoking bans in good light because it will also help them. If you think

about it in a positive way, doesn't the smoking ban help smokers cut back on the number of

cigarettes they burn in a day? Cutting back on the total amount of sticks smokers smoke in a day

can drastically improve the quality of their lives. Once a smoker realizes how much better his

body has become after he cuts back on cigarettes, he'll want to decide to completely quit the

habit.

If you look at the smoking ban provisions, it isn't bad at all. It is reasonable, if not

entirely right. Here are some of the rules included in the smoking ban:

 Young men and women aged 17 and below are not allowed to purchase or smoke any tobacco

product.
 A “No Smoking” sign should be put up in areas where the smoking ban is supposed to be in

effect.
 At maximum, big bars and restaurants can assign 30% of the total floor space for smoking

customers. The designated smoking area should be isolated from the non-smoking area and should

have a “Smoking Area” sign to inform the customers.

People should not think of smoking bans so negatively. They are, after all, made for the sake of

smokers and non-smokers alike.
