Using A Positive Mindset To Quit Smoking

By: Monch Bravante

Many people who smoke have expressed a desire to quit smoking. They are aware of the detrimental effects smoking can cause their health as well as the realization that smoking is one sure habit to misuse your finances.
But kicking the habit is not an easy thing to do. In giving up an addiction, desire is not the same as determination. For those who are trying to quit smoking, depression is an issue that needs attention and focus. If quitting smoking is difficult enough when you're feeling happy, how much more difficult it would be when one is suffering from a state of depression?
Most people describe depression as a black veil of despair that tends to envelope one's whole being. They seem to have lost their energy and experience a hard time concentrating or keeping their focus. For no apparent reason, a depressed person can easily be irritated and agitated. While feeling the blues is a normal experience for everyone, it becomes a concern when it lingers for more than two weeks and starts to interfere with your daily life.
Depression is characterized by the following symptoms:
· sleeplessness
· sadness
· difficulty concentrating
· anxiety or an "empty feeling
· fatigue
· changes in appetite (more or less)
· loss of interest in hobbies, activities
· emotional irritability
Relapse usually happens during periods of depression. It becomes more difficult to stay focused, motivated, and resolved. This condition, however, is usually mild and temporary for those people who suffer bouts of depression during the cessation process. Once diagnosed and/or treated for depression prior to quitting smoking, it is important to monitor any changes in symptoms that arise during the early part of their smoke-free life. Experiencing changes in their symptoms may necessitate changes in treatment. But when there's a drastic change in mood or when these symptoms persist for a longer period of time, it is important to see your doctor right away. However, when you realize that you are experiencing a more common and temporary upset, simply let the feelings flow by relaxing.
To quit smoking is a major personal decision. Definitely, you will have some sort of bodily and emotional reactions. It's a period of craving, whining, crying, even screaming. There's no reason to deny such emotions. Just allow it to happen. The mind and the body are still in a period of transition and adjustment. It's but normal to struggle with one's emotions during the process.
There are times when a person trying to quit smoking may feel like the world is crumbling down, always remember to acknowledge what you are working to accomplish. Stock up on gratitude. It will help offset the negative emotions and make it easier to manage depression while quitting smoking.
In the process of overcoming the habit of smoking, it is essential to have a change in perspective. One should have the positive mindset that to quit smoking is to give oneself a favor, instead of the negative mindset of deprivation. Once a person allows this mindset transformation to happen, the veil of depression will begin to be lifted.
