Visiting The Spanish City Of Malaga

By: Javier Melendez

While in Spain, reasons for paying a visit to Malaga are many, but some vital ones that will be etched into your memory follow below:

Malaga's Geographical Location

Malaga is seated perfectly as the gateway that proceeds on to the Costa del Sol (the Sunshine Coast). Its situation is one of the best spots for excursions, as a visit to the stunning cities of Cordoba, Seville and Granada can comfortably be made from here. It actually gives you the benefit of a very historical culture and an agreable modern world, all while just sitting back and resting at the exquisite beachfronts out there. So it doesn’t really matter whether you fall into the category of people who party hard, or prefer a book for company or even choose sporting activities. At Malaga, you will feel completely at ease!

The Malagan People

The people of Malaga (the malagueños) are ever-smiling, accomodating and very friendly. The malagueños, are also experts at partying hard. They rarely consider themselves as unhappy, and there’s no reason why you should treat them so. Malagueños totally love the food they eat, and it's very unusual not to find them grouped at pubs, restaurants and bars, where they truly delight in their fun... at their best telling hilarious jokes and telling their stories.

The Weather

Sun in Malaga shines for around 320 days annually, so just relaxing and being at your laziest best on the seafront out there is what you’d ideally like to be doing! Malaga's great weather is principally due to its location: while the mountains protect Malaga from extreme cold, the Med provides a cooling breeze during the hot summer months. Malaga's average temperature is around 22C, so it also really doesn’t matter which time of the year you visit Malaga – it’s always a treat!

Food & Drink

Malaga has a rich food culture. With a variety of food such as sea food, sweet wine, gazpacho, etc. at its disposal, you can actually call Malaga a haven for food lovers. There are abundant cafes, bars, and restaurants, which you can visit to sample the choice of their fare. Make sure that you taste the pescaito frito (a malagueño recipe of fried sardines). Another must visit would be to a bodega (a wine cellar), where wine is poured directly from barrels, rather than from bottles.

Museums and Exhibitions

Malaga is renowned as the "City of museums" as it has more than 20 of some note, many of which are located in the same area. The modern art and religious art housed in these museums is a real treat for the eyes. Malaga was also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso and so a lot of his works are on display in the city. The most notable museum for Picasso is the Picasso Museum.

Malaga has a rich and varied cultural heritage. With a history of 3000 years it has been conquered by various cultures, and the blend of these has made a unique and a distinct character upon Malaga. Added to this, there is always some event taking place. With a number of fiestas and exhibitions, theatrical events and concerts as well as music and dance, Malaga has created an identity of its own. Witnessing the festive celebrations such as Semana Santa, the Feria de Agosto or the Fiesta Mayor are a definite must!
