By: Melissa Fox

You must be absolutely thrilled to know about your pregnancy! Hearty congratulations from all of us here! Now let us check out some facts about your pregnancy. Did you know that you pass through several stages of pregnancy? Though you might think your pregnancy is just one long incident that lasts about nine months, what actually happens within you is quite different.

Your pregnancy can actually be divided into three main stages, which could roughly be compartmentalized in the timeframe of about three months each. Make it a point to read carefully through this article, so that you can gain more information about how the little life growing inside you takes shape through its multi-stage journey out into this world!

The main stages of your pregnancy are referred to as ‘trimesters’. The following are the characteristics of each one of those trimesters:

First trimester

How long it lasts

Your first trimester lasts for about three and a half months. This is a time period of about 14 weeks.

What you can expect to experience in this trimester

The first trimester may end up being pretty much rough for you. This is known to be the worst trimester for many pregnant women. While there are those exceptionally lucky mothers-to-be who do not feel a thing during this period, most women complain of many signs and symptoms of early pregnancy.

Nausea, vomiting, giddiness, fatigue and tenderness are some of the most common symptoms you can expect to experience at this time. Additionally, you could feel irritable, hyper-sensitive and just generally spaced out! Some women also feel the urge to urinate more frequently than normal.

If you have been going through this mess, just hang in there. Grin and bear it, for this too shall pass! All initial symptoms disappear when you cross this trimester. Take good care of your health. Quit alcohol and smoke and eat a well-balanced, fiber-rich diet. Also consume additional vitamin and mineral nutrients if advised by your doctor.

Second trimester

How long it lasts

Your second trimester lasts till the end of the seventh month of pregnancy. This is probably the best trimester for the mother-to-be.

What you can expect to experience in this trimester

You start glowing due to your pregnancy and your tummy balloons out impressively! You can expect a feeling of extreme well-being all the way through this trimester, as your initial symptoms fade out during this happy phase. To add to your joys, you can even feel your little one moving and kicking inside you, so you feel absolutely on top of the world at this time! In case you wish to, you can even know the sex of your child at this point of time.

Make sure to consume some 2500 calories per day. Include a lot of fiber-rich food and incorporate moderate exercise if your physician advises it. Also, be careful while moving around and avoid lifting weights. You are growing bigger and heavier by the day, which means, you could also get clumsy sometimes!

Third trimester

What you can expect to experience in this trimester

This again is a tough trimester to face, both physically and emotionally. You would also be worried about childbirth and parenting. Just keep up your smile and think of the great times ahead.

Go slow on the exercise schedule and keep eating healthy. Go for regular check-ups and take good care of yourself!

Now that you know about the different stages of pregnancy, you also know how to proceed ahead in each stage. Wish you all the very best!
