What You Must Know About General Symptoms Of Autism

By: Melissa Fox

Each individual is different and so, the degree and symptoms of autism that victims exhibit, would be as different as their individual personalities. This makes the whole picture very complex and complicated, as there is no one particular symptom that all autistic patients display.

But speaking in general terms, autism does have some typical symptoms, will be similar in kind, though they may vary in degree from person to person.

Usually, autistic people tend to have tremendous disabilities in relation to social skills, language skills and motor skills as well. But this need not always be the case. What makes this condition even more difficult to detect is that these very weaknesses may end up being the strength of certain other autistic children. For instance, some children afflicted with autism may have a fantastic flair for picking up languages, might seem extra observant and so on, totally misleading both his family and medical experts.

The following are some of the general symptoms of autism:

Social skills

The autistic child will appear to entirely withdraw from social interaction of any kind. He refuses to respond to his parents’ presence and goes into his own private shell.
He avoids all eye contact and sometimes stares blankly at nothingness.
He gets easily upset by the presence of just a few extra people around. The autistic child then displays extreme distress, like he cannot stand even that small intrusion into his private space.
Such children do not get along with people and prefer their solitude to everything else.

Language skills

Children afflicted with autism are slow at language development. They are also weak with language skills.
If they do not altogether stop talking, these children might start talking nonsense or have an obvious speech defect.
They cannot make sense of slang or metaphors. They only understand the simplest words used in the language.

Sensory skills

Most autistic children are either under or over sensitive to light, sound and other external stimuli. Some could show both hyper and hypo sensitivity to the same.
Yet others show a craving for closeness and strong bear hugs from people they are completely comfortable with.

Motor skills

While autistic people do not usually show any obvious signs of physical impairment, many of them have difficulty executing movements involving fine motor skills, such as in the case of writing neatly, performing athletics, running or swimming.

Behavior disorders

Most autistic people behave oddly. Some indulge in repetitive behavior.
Almost all such people shun social events and keep to themselves even in a crowd of known people.
They seldom engage in eye contact and when they do so, it cannot be sustained for more than a few seconds at a time.
They do not have many interests.
They have almost a non-ability to make and maintain friendships.
People with autism do not prefer to indulge in verbal interaction. They prefer silence instead.

The symptoms of autism are complex and widely ranging. The above-mentioned symptoms serve as a mere guide – the actual larger picture might present itself in very different ways in different victims.
