What are the symptoms of type 2 diabetes?

By: John Richmond

There really aren't very many type 2 diabetes symptoms, and the ones that you might think you have don't seem very serious. Unfortunately, if you do have it the disease progresses unabated. They could initially seem trivial. They could be written off as just part of the aging process or carrying too much weight.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms can appear slight and not worth worrying about, or easy to write off as part of the aging process. All the more reason to be aware of what they are. No knowing what the type 2 diabetes symptoms are could kill you.

The typical symptoms of type 2 diabetes include: feeling hungry or thirsty all the time, unexplained weight loss, feeling tired a lot of the time, frequent urination, vision problems, cuts or sores that are slow to heal, bad circulation, mood changes and leg soreness or pain.

Almost 6 million Americans have type 2 diabetes and don't even know about it. This could be because they associate the symptom as an illness of another kind when they may be actually at the beginning stages of the disease.

If your health is generally good and your under 45 years of age, it's quite possible that type 2 diabetes symptoms are related to another illness. But, if you are overweight and/or over 45 years of age, you should make an appointment with your doctor and relate about your worries. It may be nothing, but it's better to attack diabetes at the beginning.

Complications will result if your symptoms turn out to be from type 2 diabetes and they are ignored. Glucose levels will rise and this in turn will start to damage blood vessels and nerves. Complications are numerous, such as heart disease, retinopathy, amputations and peripheral neuropathy.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms tend to advance at a slower pace than other forms of the disease. Your physician will assess the symptoms and determine if diabetes is the diagnosis. Type 2 should be taken very seriously and not seeking medical help when symptoms appear can be dangerous.

In addition to watching for type 2 diabetes symptoms, be aware of the many risk factors as well: obesity, apple-shaped figure, age, sedentary lifestyle, family history of the disease, history of diabetes in pregnancy, impaired glucose tolerance, being of aboriginal, African, Latin American or Asian ancestry, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
