What Does It Take To Have A Dog Kennel?

By: David Yuri

The first step you have to take is to contact your local council or other dogs breeds and kennels in India (although perhaps not local) to ask what you will need. As well as that another person that might be able to help is your local vet, who might know a lot of things about pet dogs in India. Make sure you have all the suppliers first.

There are a lot of hidden items you need to properly run a dog kennel. Secondly you do need licensing and zoning depending on your area. If this is an already run dog kennel they may already have the necessary licenses to be transferred. Call around to some other dog breeds and kennels in India to see if they will help you out with some questions. Some kennels will be arrogant and see you as a threat; others will want to help because they understand you would be doing this with or without their help.

As the number of pet dogs in India is rising, so is the number of kennels – that is why there are new rules and regulations for the kennels now like wiping down the walls; or no wooden kennels are allowed; there must be under floor heating, and so on. The environmental health and your local council will be able to help you more in this matter, but you should know what’s ahead.

You should know how many dogs you will have - are you talking on a scale of boarding 20-30 dogs or more? As well as that, are you talking about building kennels from scratch or buying them? A piece of advice would be to buy them, as a lot of dogs breeds and kennels in India are not allowed to function anymore due to poor administration. Even if you are buying the kennels you have to make sure before anything that the kennels are bang up to date with today’s legislation. If they are not you will be talking a lot of money to fetch them up to standard. You will also have to make sure that there are facilities with warm/hot water to wash dishes.

Pet dogs in India may not be that sensible, but you should still be aware of the legislation. For example kennels should not be made out of wood, but if they are they should be covered in galvanized sheeting. The kennels should also have a source of heating, weather it is a heated bulb in the dogs sleeping area, or full central heating in the kennel block if indoors. When all of the above is in order you will need an inspector to come and inspect the place and if nothing needs doing he or she will issue you with a license.

You will also need to know about animal welfare, and have a good general knowledge of caring for animals. Having dogs breeds and kennels in India is a very lucrative business to be in, but like anything it has its ups and downs. One of the down sides is that you’re open seven days a week, all year and tied constantly; the ups are people having pets and being happy.
