What's With All The Fuss About Oakley?

By: Javier Melendez

While the stylish Oakley eyshield company produces some of the most trendy high-end shades and ski masks in the world, there are several other items the business provides the public. Nowadays, a variety of styles of footwear, backpacks, timepieces, prescription glasses and clothing lines are sold under the Oakley brand: that's pretty incredible for an organization that was formed in the backseat an automobile!

The innovations put into an Oakley product often flatten competitors, this includes Oakley's highly visible 'O' emblem that often appears upon the sides of many of their glasses and sunglasses. More recently, the striking skull logo is also making an impression on youths, who are apparently gaining a taste for Oakley branded wear.

The birth of Oakley was engineered by Jim Jannard, who in the year 1975, began selling, what was dubbed then as, "The Oakley Grip" from the back of his car. While traveling to motocross events, Jannard promoted the Oakley Grip to riders, who went wild for their uniqueness. The Oakley name garnered a reputation via word-of-mouth, but since the grips were usually hidden in motocross competitions, they received a poor level of exposure. In 1980, Jannard created a pair of goggles he had named the "O-Frame", which showed the classic Oakley brand on their. This was to be the first time the brand name became apparent.

In 1984, the "Oakley Factory Pilot" (sun glassess with the same fashion as the O-Frame) was launched. Factory Pilots were made of plastic and offered removable lenses. They quickly became a favorite of professional cyclists, such as Tour de France winner, Greg LeMond. The proceeding times would see the creation of a variety of other sunglasses, like the Blades, Razor Blades, and the Mumbos.

Many consumers enjoy the quality of Oakley products and are happy to spend the extra dollars to own an authentic pair of sunglasses, sports visors or ski eyewear. Oakley's compliance in the basic impact and high impact safety under ANSI Z87.1 requirements also attracts many buyers.

The materials used and the fabrication of Oakley equipment have also earned a reputation as some of the finest on the market. Oakley is also responsible for setting a precedent in eyewear prices that continues to influence current market trends.

Interestingly, Oakley frames are made from materials that the company has given their own names to. For example:

* O-Luminum is the name given to the aluminium alloy used to make some Oakley glasses, like the RazrWire.
* O Matter is the name given to the nylon composite responsible for most of the plastic eye-wear that Oakley produces.
* X Metal refers to the titanium alloy utilized in the "X Metal" style of Oakley products.
* Many people are also fanatical about the patented Oakley lenses, which provide impact resistance and block out all varieties of UV and harmful blue light.

Over the decades, Jannard's objective to manufacture and promote products that worked better and pushed the boundaries of technology and physics has become a massive success story. Today, decades of Oakley innovation and imagination have led to more than 540 copyrights that touch the lives of millions in over 110 countries worldwide.
