What To Look For When Selecting A Bunk Bed

By: Noa R Flint

Many bunk beds now designed with versatility in mind. It is possible to start with a basic set-up, adding and changing elements along the way to grow with the changing needs of the child. Some can eventually be converted into two standard-size adult beds for when the bunk bed set-up is no longer required.

Types of Bunk Beds

The main types of bunk beds available on the market include:-

2-sleeper Bunk Beds
3-sleeper Bunk Beds
Toddler Bunk Beds
Futon Bunk Beds

The traditional and perhaps best known configuration is the 2-sleeper bunk bed, one single bed on top of another. A 3-sleeper bunk bed can be made up of either a single top bunk with a double bottom bed or a single top bunk, another single bottom bunk and a pull-out bed underneath the lower bed.

The toddler bed is a shorter version of the standard bunk bed and is generally suitable for children between the ages of 3-6 years.

The futon bunk bed comprises a single top bunk with a futon beneath. The futon comes in the form of a chair or sofa that conveniently opens out into a comfortable single or double bed.

Materials and Finishes

The main materials used in the construction of bunk beds are wood or metal. Those made from wood range from high quality wood such as oak and spruce through to solid pine or particle board. To maintain the wood and to make it easy to care for, wooden bunk beds are generally oiled. Finishes vary widely and are a matter of personal preference and fit to your decor. Other finishes include laminates such as maple, beech, oak or clear lacquer or varnish over wood.

Features and Options

Bunk beds come in a variety of colours and different themes. Younger children will appreciate brightly-coloured bunk beds in their favourite design such as 'Jungle' or 'Football'. Bunk beds for younger ones can be designed with a play tent attached to the lower bunk. This can serve as an additional play area in the daytime.

A useful feature to consider is the option of a pull-out single or double drawer underneath the lower bunk. This is indispensable for storing toys, books or clothes. Alternatively, the under bed space can be used to store a pull-out third bed for little guests during sleepovers.

Depending on manufacturer and model, bunk beds may also come with the option of either sloping or straight ladders. Again, this is a matter of personal preference and the available space. By definition, a model with a sloping ladder will create a slightly larger 'footprint' in the room.

Safety Considerations

There are a few vital points to consider to ensure safety when using a bunk bed:

Ladders should be designed with flat treads and safety grips to ensure ease of climbing. As an additional safety feature, ladders should include glow-in-the-dark markings for use in a darkened room. This is particularly important where siblings of different ages (and thus bed times) are to occupy the beds.

Bumper rails around the bed are essential features to prevent a child falling. These should be on ALL sides of the bed, not just the 'outer' side as many bunk beds end up being located with the head to the wall and space on either side.

Mattresses must fit the bunk bed perfectly.

Children must be prevented from jumping from the bed (tempting thought this is!) or from hanging objects from the top bunk which may impede the ladder or fall on the occupant of the lower bed.

Bunk beds usually require home assembly -- follow instructions carefully, making sure to assemble each part with care.

Every bunk bed should be sturdily constructed and designed to meet the stringent European safety standards, carrying the CE certification.

Conclusion

Make sure the bunk bed chosen fits the space and layout of the children's bedroom; ensure there is adequate room for pull-out accessories such as drawers or guest beds. Plan ahead to ensure the bunk bed and its features can grow with the child's needs. Finally, bunk beds are inherently safe if used correctly. Be sure that your children understand the importance of safe use of the bed and that you have chosen a model with appropriate safety rails, glow-in-the-dark markings on the ladder and that you have assembled it with care.
