White Spots on Toenails – Truths, Avoidance and Cures

By: Matt Stewart

Everyone occasionally gets white spots on toenails or fingernails and majority of the times they are nothing to be concerned about. Those small crescent shaped white spots that come out at the cuticle and march gradually outwards as the nail develops, are really the result of minor injury to the base of the nail. You apparently hit your finger or toe causing a minor injury at the root. The nail will develop and the white spot will vanish, leaving a usual looking nail.

Sometimes, yet, white spots on toenails or fingernails are clue of something more dangerous: it may be the early mark advising that a fungus has established below the nail and is beginning to develop. If the whitish spot pops up anywhere other than at the cuticle, eminently at the other border, or at the tip of the nail, it needs close eye. If a fungus is growing, the fading should get bigger and it will probably change color, hazing to shades of yellow or brown. The nail may split from the nail bed as the fungus grows, and the nail will start to get thicker and may start to come apart, flaking and chipping.

White spots on toenails or fingernails that are getting sizable and aren't growing out with the nail should be observed by a doctor for professional diagnosis. If it is fungal nail infection (onychomycosis), it’s a good idea to start treating it promptly, before it gets too complicated. The more it is able to break, and the thicker the infected nail becomes, the harder it will be to cure the infection. Small white spots on toenails that are just beginning to break may react to treatment comparatively quickly.

There are many old home remedies, over the counter treatments, natural curing goods and prescription drugs that are advised for the cure of onychomycosis. Talk your options with your medical professional. Your choice will be affected by the expanse of the infection, your level of ease with prescription drugs that come with potential side effects, your trust in natural or home remedies, and, significantly, your budget. Prescription drugs for fungal nail infections tend to be inordinarily high-priced, commercial goods are in the mid-range, and home remedies can be virtually free. None are absolutely guaranteed to work. You'll have to choose how much it is important to you to chuck white spots on toenails.

To play back – don’t be snappy. Most white spots on toenails are nothing to care about. If you have discolorations that you think are created by a fungus, see your doctor first for confirmation and then take it from there.
